Description

Patented. Mar. 2, i926..
JOI-IN L. TYLER, OF GADSDEN, ALABAMA.
Application filed .April 22,15%25. Serial No. 24,952.
'/'0 /f/ :M10/n it muy r'fmccrn:
lic it known that l, .lor-IN L. Trinca, a citizen o'l the United States, residing at Gadsden, in the county ot lltowah and State ol' Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe Counters, ot which the -following is a specification.
My invention relates to in'iprovemenls in shoeronslruetion and particularly to an inlproved shoe counter. The primary object ot' the invention is the provision of a metallie counter, anda metallic counter cover adapted to b disposed in a shoe so that durability and flexibility are provided at the heel ot the shoe. y
nXnother object ot the invention is the provision ot a novel torni ol' vcounter stillener comprising :L counter having a certain degree ot inherent Flexibility.
'lhe further object ot' `thc invention is to provide a 'counter cover which may be molded or pressed to the contour oi' the shoe, being constructed of a material which will prevent running down of the shoe heel.
lVil h these objects .in view, end such others as will be apparent from the description, theinvention resides in the novel ccnstruction, combination and arrangement ot parts, hereinafter described and claimed and illus trated in the accompanying drawings, of which:
Figure l is n vertical section through the heel portion ot a. shoe equipped with the invention;
Figure 2 is a perspective of my improved counter; and
Figure 3 is a perspective of my improved counter cover.
The invention in detail comprises a shoe counter, 10, cut from e, blank of thin, soinewhat resilient metal, to conform to the outline oi the rear of a heel. The counter thus :formed is substantially ot' horse-shoe forma tion having its top edge curving gradually downward at the sides, il, to the forward end et the counter. The bottom of the counter is inturned to form an anchoring ledge which is serrated or Scalloped to provide, a plurality of inturned lateral flanges, l2, each ot which is provided with a tastening nail aperture, 13.
The counter cover, ll, is molded or pressed from a blank ot heavier metal, and conforms in outline and shape substantially to the counter, 10, except that the counter may bc nested therein, to bind a portion of the laid within the counter cover, the base flange, 15.'
pro-
the two members. The` serted into nesting relation Within the counter i cover, and owing to the configuration of the tivo nieml-iers the leather upper, 17, Will be securely clamped between the two.
' In application to the shoe sole, the base llange, 12, and, 15, ot the counter and counter @over respectively with the upper clamped tlierebetuecn, are applied so that they extend internally and between certain layers thereof such as, 18, and, 19. then the heel litt, 20, is applied, thc fastening nails, 2l, are driven down through the registering nail holes, 13, and, 16, into the body of the heel to secure the parts in assembled. relation. In the illustration no outer covering for the counter cover', 14, has been shown, as any'such may be applied as desired, sueh outer facing forming no part of the present invention.
By reason ot the inherent iiexibility residing in ihevcounter, 10, the walls thereof are permitted to give slightly, yielding to the stresses encountered when the shoe is in service. The cover, lll, being of a heavier material, is stitter and more durable, considerably reinforcing the heel portion of the shoe and preventing the shoe from running down at the back.
While have illustrated and described certain details and material entering into ot the sole at the rear ot' the shoe the construction of the invention, l desire` it to be understood that the invention is not to be limited thereby, but that any desired changes and modifications may be made in such details as will tall within the scope of the invention s claimed.
It claim l. ln a shoe counter, a cover member' adapted to be disposed at the rear ot a shoe above a heel, and an internal member of substantially the configuration of the cover inen'iber adapted to nest Within said cover member independent of said cover member to clamp a portion or a shoe upper thereben 2 Lemme -tween and for securing said members in as vided with a base ange whereby a portion sembled relation in'a shoe. of a shoe upper may be clamped between 10 2. A shoe counter consruction comprising said counter and cover with said count/er be the combination with a metaliic commer .ing disposed in nesed relation within seid A15 shaped to conform to the heel of a, sh, of cover. l fa lmetallic counter cover shaped to the con' In testimony whereof I have axe iy iguration of said counter and adapted to signature. 4 be applied thereover, said cover being pro- JOHN L. TYLER.
