Patented Dec. 8, 1925.-
mrso STATES EDWARD T. EDWARDS, OF LATROBE, PENNS'YJLV 7 com on.
Application filed March 6, 1924. Serial No. 89?,290.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1', EDWARD T. Enwnnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Latrobe, in the county of Westmoreland, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Golf of which the fo lowing is a speci- My invention relates to olfclubs, and embodies a modification of t e construction disclosed in an application filed by me of of the joint when united.
- 4% end of the sectional shaft, the upper end Fi ure 3.
section of the club.
even date herewith, Serial No. 697,289.
In said application, I have disclosed a golf club, the shaft of which isformed in sections of substantially equal length, the same being detachably connected together by a left-handed double screw-thread, and my present invention is designed still further to accelerate the speed of assembly of these parts, without affecting the strength This object I accomplish in the manner and by the means hereinafter described and I claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a golf club illustrating my construction.
Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the joint of the club, showing said joint between the sections of the shaft nected.
Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse section taken on the line III-III of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail longitudinal section taken on the line IVIV of disconhigure 5 is an enlarged end view of the upper or handle section of the club.
Figure 6 is a similar view of the lower Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several views.
In the said drawing, the reference numeral 1 denotes the head of a conventional golf club, such as a mashie, and 2 the lower 8 of which has fixed thereto the usual pping handle 4. The
lower end of the up er section 3 is reduced annularly at 5 to receive a metallic sleeve 6, the lower solid end of which is reduced at 7 and provided with a double screw-thread 8 hereinafter described. The lower section 2 of the shaft is similarly reduced at its upper end to receive a sleeve 9 interiorl threaded at 10 to corres end with the thread 8 on the sleeve 6. in
tion hereinbefore referred to,
my applicathese screwthreads are so disposed that the sections the construction disclosed in screw together counterclockwise, so that the to blows imparted to the club in striking the ball tend to tighten the thread connection between said sections, thus maintainingthe shaft sections rigidly connected.
In order still further to increase the as speed of connection of these parts, over that shown in my application hereinbefore referred to, l have interrupted the threaded portions longitudinally at 11 upon opposite portion of one section with the unthreaded sides, whereby by opposing the threaded portion of the opposite section, the two parts may be freely brought together'lon itudinally almost to locking position, and y then rotating the parts relatively counter- (a clockwise, said threads will lock the parts in Figures 1 and 4.
By providing the double thread construe interengage and the position shown in tion disclosed in my application hereinbeso fore referred to f accomplish a'very rapid engagement of the threads, and a consequent positive locking of the parts through a relative rotation of the sections of the club of less than onequarter of the turn, and this e5 construction enables me to employ an extremely fine thread, if desired, which will provide a locking joint of maximum strength.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is a 1. A golf club, embodying a shaft formed in sections of substantially equal length,
united by a threaded connection formed of as double thread the spirals of which alter ans-man as. news,
