To all whom it concern: Be it known that I, WILL K. HOLMES, a citizen of the United States of America,
and a resident of Tulsa, county of Tulsa, and
' tion is to provide quick detachable means for such dome covers which shall secure the same to the body of the tank car in a reliable manner and shall efiectually prevent the escape to the atmosphere of the vapors and gases issuing from the volatile liquids within the car.
Another object relates to the provision of a protecting head for such domes, whereby the escape of gases and vapors around the transparent means provided in such domes, is prevented dnring movement of the car,
such gases'and vapors being retained within the protecting head until the point of destination of the car hasbeen reached. Thus the danger of fire caused by escaping sparks from the locomotive, is eflectually reduced. I Other objects will appear as the description of the invention progresses.

The disc portion of the cover is provided with a plurality of radial extensions 30, each of which has a notch 31 on one of its radial edges. .A bolt 32 is adapted to cooperate with each of these notches and'extends into the dome rim- 24. A nut 33 on each of the bolts is provided for fastening the dome cover-to the dome. Transparent members or windows 72, 7 3 are provided in the cover for observing and illuminating the interior as fully described in the copendingv applica tion above referred to, one of said members being provided to admit light a) the interior of the tank and theother for permitting the operator or attendant to view the contents of the tank.
The protector head comprises a cupshaped shell 40 having a flange 41. A pluralityof radial slots are cut into the periphery of the flange 41 as shown in Figure :2, and along one edge of each slot is a recess for the reception of suitable fastening means such as a bolt d2 which extends into the body 20 of the dome cover; The nuts 43,

In operation the tank car is brought into position at a filling station as shown in Fig ure 1. The protector head may be removed by removing the nuts 43 and the protector head is allowed to fall into the position shown in Figure 1, being retained therein by means of the chain 60. Suitable hose connections from the supply pipes 21 and 22 are attached to the valves 70 and 71 respectively, and the tank of the car is filled. The hose couplings are then removed and the protector head is put in position over the dome cover and securely bolted thereto.
The 'car is then sent to its destination in the usual manner. The agitation and vibration to which the contents of the tank car are subjected during such travel, are likely to cause the liquid to be splashed onto the gaskets around the windows 72 and 73 and to seep therethrough. The gas'and vapor volatilized therefrom will collect within the cup-shaped member 40 and are effectually protected from the sparks from the locomotive.
Upon arrival at its destination the tank car is placed in position 0 posite a station similar to that shown inigure 1, and the hose connections are established as before to pipes corresponding to the pipes 21, 22. The contents of the tank are then withdrawn in the usual manner and the tank car is thusmade available for subsequent use in the same manner as before.
Apparatus of preferred form and construction has been illustrated and described for the purpose of showing a way in which this invention may be practiced, but the inventive thought is broader than this illus It is therefore understood that the scope of the invention is not to be limited by the present disclosure, reference being had to the appended'claims for that purpose.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with a tank car dome,
' of a removable dome cover having a plurality of radial extensions on its periphery, each extension having a notch on one radial edge thereof, means adapted to engage said notches for securing the cover to the dome, a protector head adapted to be disposed above the dome cover, a horizontally disposed fiange integral with the protector head having a plurality of radial extensions, each extension having a notch on one radial edge thereof, and means cooperating with the notches for securing the protector head to the dome cover.
2. The combinationwith a tank car dome, of a removable circular dome cover adapted to close the dome opening and having a pinrality of radial extensions on its periphery, circumferentially arranged means projecting from the dome rim and cooperating with said radialextensions for removably securing the cover to the dome, a protector head having a horizontally disposed peripheral flange adapted to rest upon the dome cover concentric with and inside of the plurality of radial extensions and the dome cover securing means, and circumferentially dis posed means projecting from said dome cover and cooperating with the peripheral flange of said protector head for removably attaching said head to said dome cover.
3. A removable gas tight dome cover for loading tank cars, comprising a cover plate or lid having a plurality of radial extensions on its periphery, each. extension having a notch on one radial edge thereof, and a depending flange for positioning the cover over the dome opening, a charging line through which liquid is supplied to the tank, a gas or vent line through which inflammable vapors are withdrawn from the .tank, a gas tight transparent member or window, an independent gas tight window to admit light to the interior of the tank and to permit observation of the interior through -the first named transparent member or win.-
