UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE. A
HERBERT S. MILLS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR. TO MILLS NOVELTY COMPANY,
OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A. CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
REEL FOR VENDING MACHINES.
I Application filed March 31, 1924. Serial No. 70:2,175.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, HERBERT S. MILLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reels for Vending M-alchines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to reels and more especially to reels for carrying advertising cards and is adapted for use in vending machines and the like. The invention is fully described. in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a. front elevation of a completed reel;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of one of the actions composing the reel" before assem- Fi g. 3 is a plan view of the reel shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 44 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is a partial slightly. enlarged perspectlve of the reel showing a card or strip being inserted therein.
' The embodiment shown comprises a reel made up of two similar sections as shown in Fig. 2 which are preferably stamped from sheet metal or other suitable sheet material.
These comprise a center or hub ortion 10 having a central openingll w ich is adapted to fit over "a suitable hub (not shown), the latter 'also having a suitable flange adapted to receive screws or pins which ,pass through holes 12 in the center or hub ortion 10 in two of the sections which will now be described, and which are placed back to back as shown in Fig. 1
A series of ears 19 are preferably disposed about the inner circumference of the web 17 and are so spaced that when two of the secfications.
flanges encircle and are s aced from the outer margins of the portions 15, so that when the two sections are assembled as may be seen in Figs; 4 and 5, these flanges provide a ready means for holding printed strips or cards 21, the latter being flexible and insertable through aligning slots 22 therein. These slots are preferably placed in line with the center of the s okes so that when the sections are assemble they will be in alignment as shown in Fig. 5.
Thus it will be seen that a very li ht and neat yet rigid construction is obtaine which is highly satisfactory and which may be manufactured at a great saving both in materials and labor over the reels heretofore used for this purpose.
While I have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modi- Changes therefore i in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly. as possible in view 'of the prior art.
I claim;
' 1. A reel for holding stri s comprising two sheet. metal members p aced back to back, each havin ears adapted to be bent over portions of t e other member to retain said members together, the eripheries of said reels being cylindrical, having facing flanges formed on the outer edges thereof and adapted to receive advertising strips,
and slots in said flangesfor inserting said strips. Y
. 2. A reel formed of two' substantially identical sheet metal members placed back to back,each having a cylindrical eri hery, an integral internal flange, integral ra ial members forming spokes and a central hub plate, said flan es, spokes and hub plates of each member ing juxtaposed against the corresponding parts of the'other member, and
cars extending inwardly from the flanges of each member, said ears being turned over the flanges of the other member.
3. A reel formed of two substantially identical sheet-metal members placed back to back, each having a cylindrical periphery, an internal flange,.integral radial members forming spokes and a cent al hub plate, said flanges, spokes and hub plates of each member being juxtaposed against the corresponding parts of the other member, means for. securing said members together in juxtaposed relation, the peripheral portion of each/member having its outer edge bent upwardly and inwardly to form retaining flanges, said flanges being notched to admit a display-strip.
4. A reel comprising a pair of cut-away sheet-metal disks havingregistering spokes and hub-plates and having out-turned lateral cylindrical rim-portions provided at their outer edges with inturned flanges en circling the outer margins of said rim-portions, said flanges being provided with notches to admit a display-strip, means securing said disks together, and a flexible display-strip mounted on said rim-portions and retained by said flanges.
5. A reel comprising a pair of cut-away sheet-metal disks having out-turned lateral cylindrical rim-portions provided at their outer edges with inturned flanges encircling the outer margins of said rim-portions, said flanges being provided with notches to admit a display-strip, a hub-plate and spokes formed integrally with one of said disks,'
means securing said disks together, and a flexible display-strip mounted on said rimportions and retained by said flanges.
