Description

'r. J. HARTMAN KNEE PROTECTOR Filed Feb. 13, 1924 Patented Feb. 3, 1925.
UNITED STATES THOMAS J. HARTMAN,
OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
KNEE PROTECTOR.
Application filed February 13, 1924. Serial No. 692,461.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS J HARTMAN,
a citizen of the United States, and aresident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knee Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to knee protectors, and has for its object to provide cushioning means for effectively covering the knee and means for conveniently mounting it in position on the knee.
In the protectors of this type which are on the market cushioning or protecting elements are generally mounted in separate parts on an elastic band or means with which the protector is mounted on the knee, and as this elastic fastening means is apt to spread or stretch, the cushioning elements or strips are thereby apt to separate, thus producing unprotected spaces and rendering such protector defective in this respect. It is my object and purpose to provide a protector which overcomes this defect, and in such protector I use a single continuous covering member or pad placeable over the knee and which is made of cushioning material but will not stretch or separate longitudinally or laterally upon the knee, and to provide additional cushioning means, in place of the usual cushioning strips on the outside thereof; and furthermore to provide flexible means at opposite parts of said cushioning pad and spaced apart thereon with which the protector is held properly in position on the knee.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which Fig. 1 is a side view showing my invention mounted in position on the knee;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the protector;
Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section of the protector taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and
between them Fig. 4 is a cross section of the fastening means, taken on line 14 of Fig. 3.
The preferred form of construction comprises a cushioning means or pad 6 constructed of cushioning material, padded felt or the like, and additional cushioning means 7, preferably made of felt and in a number of strips extending forward from the pad, and arranged spirally as shown, said spiral strips 7 being fastened on the body with stitching 8 or the like and having its coils slightly separated to provide narrow spaces 9 to readily allow spreading of the said strip.
Means is provided for mounting the band on the knee, and preferably in the form of an upper member 10 and a lower member 10 fastened to the upper and lower sides of said pad, as by the means of stitching 11, said fastening means being preferably in the form of elastic annular bands for conveniently mounting the protector on the knee, and said bands being spaced apart to separately engage the upper and lower part of the leg, adjacent the knee, and to permit free movement thereof at the knee.
This form of pad provides effective and positive cushioning means over the entire knee, and" means thereon for conveniently fastening the protector on the knee, especially adapting it for athletic use.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carry ing my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but
desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is;
1. A knee protector comprising a pad of felt for covering the knee, a spiral ridge of felt fastened to the outer side thereof, and annular elastic bands secured to the upper and the lower parts of said pad and being spaced apart for engaging the upper and lower parts of the leg adjacent the knee.
2. A knee protector comprising a pad of In testimony whereof I have signed my felt for covering the knee, a spiral ridge of name to this specification in the presence of 10 felt fastened to the outer side thereof, and two subscribing Witnesses.
a pair of cylindrical elastic bands each 5 stitched With one of its edges to an edge THOMAS J. HARTMAN.
of said pad, said bands beingspae-e-(Lapart, Witnesses for engagingxthe upper and lower; parts-ofv MYRTLE GASPERSEN, the leg adjacent the knee. ANNA BECK.
