Be it known that I, CHeRLEs Jn'sNie a citizen of. the United. States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphiaand. State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful. Improvements in Flexible Holders for Pencils Erasers, and the like, of: which the followingv is a specification.

My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in flexible holders for pencils, erasers and thelike, and has for its object to provide a simple and effective device of this description adaptedtobe placed in any convenient position and so anchor a pencil or the like that the pencil may be easily located by the person. using: the same.

A further. object of this invention. is to so construct the flexible portion of the holder as to provide for an anchored article being used through a relatively wide range and yet insure its return to the normal position.

A still: further object of this invention is to provide a specially constructed base including a cushion for contact with the surface upon which the device may be placed and also to provide a panticular form of clip for conveniently attaching a pencil.

l/Vith these ends in view. invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which Fig. l, is an elevation of the device a portion of the base being broken away to show the construction thereof.

The upper portion. of the post is hollow in order that the lower end of the flexible member 11 may be secured therein by soldering or other suitable method and a space 12 is provided around the flexible member so as to prevent undue bending of the member at this point, as will be readily understood.

The flexible member 11 is preferably made of spring wire so wound that the coils thereof will normally be drawn in close contact with each other, thus causing it to stand upright as shown yet permitting it to be readily flexed in any direction.

13 represents a thimble secured to the upper end. of the flexible member by soldering or otherwise and this thimble has a hole through the top thereof for the passage of a cord 14 and in order that this cord may be readily attached to the thimble a slot 15 is formed in the side of the latter through which the knot 16 may be drawn which knot will hold the cord against withdrawal in the direction of the usual pull thereon.

17 represents a clip formed of sheet metal with suiflcient spring to hold a pencil 18 against accidental displacement and this clip has a socket 19 formed therein by cupping up a portion of the metal. said socket serving as a pocket for the reception of the knot 20 upon the opposite end of the cord 14 thus providing a'convenient means needed.

Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown as these may be varied within the limits of the appendedclaims without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is 1. As a new article of manufacture, a flexible pencil holder comprising a base having a flange, a plate also having a flange, the latter fitting within the flange of the base, a cushion ring interposed between said flanges and held in place thereby, a post passing through the base and plate and securing the same together, a flexible member anchored within the post, a thimble secured to the upper end of the flexible member, a cord attached to the thimble, and a clip attached to the outer end of said cord for holding a pencil. 2. In a device of the character described,

a base, a flange formed with said base, a cushion ring fltted withinsaid flange, a plate having a flared flange, said flanges co-acting to hold said ring in position, a post passing through the base and plate for securing the same together, and a flexible member anchored within the post, with said post having an enlarged bore at its upper end to allow flexible member to bend on a large radius, relieving wear and excessive tension on spring at one single contact point.

3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a flanged base, a cushion ring, a flanged plate fitted within the base in such manner as to hold said ring in position by the coaction of the flanges of the base and plate, said plate having a recess, a post having a threaded shank passin through the plate, a nut run upon said shank, said nut fitting within the recess, a shoulder formed with the post and contacting with the upper surface of the base, and a flexible member anchored to the post.

4:. In combination with the flexible member of a device of the character described, a thimble secured to said member, a cord attached to the thimble, and a clip formed of spring material and having a socket formed therein for pocketing a knot upon the outer end of the cord.
