earner CARL L. JOHNSON, O'F ATWATER, MINNESOTA.-
emv; GUARD.
'Application filed March 14, 1923., Serial No. 625,024. i
To allie/mm i?? 721m/ concern.'
Bc it known that l. Cim. L, JOHNSON. a citizen of the lnited States, residing at A\twater. in the county ol' Kandiyohi and State of Minnesota. have invented certain new and useful Improvements lin- Arm Guards. of which the following 4is a specification.
This invention relates to a novel arm pro- 0 tecting cuil-to be used by persons when cranking internal combustion engines to prevent bodily injury.
The primary object of this invention the provision of a protecting cuff to be worn upon the arm and over the wrist and upper part of the hand of a person. so that any blows accidentally resulting from an operation. such as the kicking of a crank incident to back tire when starting an internal conihustion engine will not result in injury to the arm, wrist or hand of the wearer.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a cuff or piece vof armor of the above mentioned character, preferably inherently rigid so that the same may be subjected to very forceful blows without mutilation thereof. Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparentiI during the course of the following detailed description. l
n the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and wherein similar reference charac-ters designate,v corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Figure i is a perspective view of a person about to crank the engine of an automotive vehicle, this person having the improved cuff upon his cranking armasto obviate injury should the crank be jerked from his hand incident to engine backfire.
Figure 2'is a side elevation of the improved culf, showing the outer side thereof.
Figure 3 is an opposite side elevation of the improved cuff, showing the. inner side thereof. 'i
Figure 4 is a fragmentary cross sectional view, showing the novel protecting construction of the improved cuff. A
ln thc drawing` wherein for thcl purpose CFI embodiment of this invention` the letter generally designates the improved protect@ of illustration is shown but the preferredv sleeve which uniformly increases in diameter from its lower end to the upper end thereof. The lower end of the body portion i0 is preferably transversely recessed in concaved manner. so that end lips i2 and 1S extend outwardly atopposite points at the lowerend of the cuff body portion 10. which are respectively adapted to overlie 'the .backend forward parts of the wrist and upper hand o5 portion of the wearer to amply protect the same. It is to be noted that the lip 12 which overlies the back of the hand or wrist of the, wearer is relatively longer than the oppositc lip lf3. rlhe extreme lower marginal edge 14 of the body portion l0. is of course arcuated so as not to provide any abrupt surfaccs. The upper marginal edge l5 of the hodyl() preferably lies in a plane which is at an acute angle to the axis of the cuff T15 A. so that the highest portion i6 of the upper end of the cuff A lies adjacent theback of the elbow of a weai'er.- and the lowerinost portion i7 will lie at the` hollow of the elbow of the wearer to permit arm movement during a cranking operation. 4
At the lower and upper ends of the cuff I armor 10, protecting linings 20 and 21 are positioned. which may be of leather or analogous fiexible material. rIhese linings S5 are preferably of Auniform lwidth about the eircun'iference of the sleeve A, and conform to the contour of the marginal edges of the ends of the. body portion l0. They are so positioned that. the major Widths thereof extend within a'nd are in abutting relation with the inside. surfaces of the sleeve armor '10. and are riveted t( the latter as by ele ments 24. so that the minor widths of the protecting linings 20 extend outwardly fbe-l 95 youd the outer marginal edges i/l and i5 of the body 10.
The position of the arm guard A 'upon the arm of a wearer can-well he understood from the above description. and from the illustration in Figure 1 of the drawing. Incident to the outwardly extending slightly yieldahle protectiner linings 20 and 2l. the skin and clothing of the wearer is not subject to laccration ort'earing, and these lin- 10a ings incident to their external projection at v the ends of the sleeve A tend to' bu' the .blows upon the sleeve or guard A. lt is of of e wearer the Sinai-ler end oli the sleeve A. is course adjacent tne Wrist or the wearer the ,rojeoting lips i9, and 13 respectively ,oreriie the outer and inner sides of the .Wrist or opper hand of the wearer. 1incident to the ,Cttliat `the outwardly extending porter-.the lining; 2,0 is ormed according to the Vcontinu' 'of the marginal-edge 14. the saine will naturally conform to the Contour of the hand and Wrist of the wearer so that n. maximum protection is afforded, although not interfering with the free hand movement`4 A necessary for e, cranking operation.
Venous changes in the shape., end arrangement of parte may loe made to the length than the inner lip.
2. protecting on??? of the class described formed of Arigid metal having outwardly extending protecting lips at an end thereof adapted to extend over the outer and inner sidesfoii the hand and irl-is.J of the wearer L'ior protecting purposes.
3.1%@ n new article of manufacture. e prooe'oting eng including e rigid body portion wiege@ having its lower end provided with inner and outer depending hand and wrist pro* teeting lips, the outer lip being of greater length than the inner lip, and yieldehle linings secured in the ends of said lood)7 and extending outwardly therefrom, the lower one oi seid lininqs having; its edges extending parallel to the lower edge of the hody and providing oppositely disposed outwardly extending lips thereon adapted to overlie the inner and outer Sides ofthe hand and wrist 'of a- Wenrer 'for protection purposes.
4. s a new article of manufacture, e pro tecting enti1 of the class described including a metal protecting easing increasing nniformly in diameter from the lower end thereof tow d the upper end thereof, said lower end thereof having e transversely coneeved niergjii'i 'to provide outwardly extendingn proteeting lips adapted to extend over in l protecting relation at the inner and outer sides of the wrist and hand of e wearer, the upper inerginal edge ot'seid Casin beinga disposed Substantially in a plane et acute angles with respect tothe axis of the enti, and leather linings riveted to the cuil easing within the saine at the ends thereof, said linings having portions which extend outwardly from the outer marginal edges 'ot' the ends of seid casing portion in conforming relation with the contour of the L-erginel edges of said4 `casing portion.
