vTo all whom it may concern.'
landv GERALD H. VVns'rovnn. citizens of the United States, residing at Richmond, `in the county of Contra Costa and State' oi' California, have invented new and useful lmprovements' in rContainers,V of `which the Jfollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and useul improvement in metal containers and has particular reference `to a container commonly used for garbage and trash purposes.
The principal object of this invention is to produce a container which will have a cover, which cover may be opened through use of a foot pedal thereby eliminating the necessity of employing the hands which may be otherwise engaged.
A still further ob'ect is to produce a device of this character which is simple in construction and therefore cheap to manu- -facture.
A still Jfurther object is to produce a device which may be attached to any container now upon the market without materially altering the construction of the same.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a container having our invention attached thereto,
Figure 2 is a top plan view of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of our device detached from a container.
Applicants are aware of the tact that various means have been employed for opening the top of a container, but these means have necessitated the using of the hand to accomplish the opening. It often happens that a person desiring to place garbage or trash in a container has both hands Jfull and therefore it is a diflicult matter to open the container andv often results in the dropping of the matter being disposed of.
We have overcome that difficulty by providing a combination of levers so arranged and secured to the side of the receptacle that by stepping upon one of the levers the motion is transmitted to the cover which we have 'hinged so"that` it may be swung' j open in order to givey access to the interior of the receptacle.
' Tn theyaccompanying drawings wherein io'rthe purpose of illustration'is shown a a top portion 7 which consists of an inclined conical shaped portion secured to the receptacle upon which a cover 8 is adapted to be placed. This port-ion 7 is provided with an upstanding collar 9 upon which the cover 8 rests. The usual handles 11 and 12 are provided for the purpose of moving the receptacle when desired.
At 13 we have shown a plate which is adapted to be secured to the receptacle in any convenient manner as for instance by rivets 14. This plate 13 carries an off-Set 16 'to which is secured a pivot bolt 17 the purpose of the offset 16 is to space the bolt 17 a sufficient distance away from the side ot the container so that a lever 18 piv'oted thereon will avoid the bead 19 formed by the joining of the receptacle and the ring 6. This lever 18 is bent as shown at 21 so as to provide a pedal portion 22. Pivoted at the opposite end of 18 as at 23 is a link 2a. This link is in turn pivoted as at 26 to the bent end 27 of a rod 28 forming the pintle of a hinge.
This rod 28 is mounted so as to rotate in hinged portions 29 and 31 riveted or otherwise secured to the portion 7 of the receptacle.
Similar hinged portions 32 and 33 are rigidly secured to the rod 28 and have their opposite ends riveted or otherwise secured to the cover 8.
The Voperation of our device is a follows Assuming that the parts are in the position shown in Figure 1 and it is desired to open the cover 8 the person steps upon the pedal 22 which pivots the lever 18 upon its pivot point 17 thus transmitting motion to the link 2&1. This motion is in turn transmitted to the bent end 27 of the rod 28 with the result that the cover 8 is moved into the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 1.
It will thus be seen that we have provided a very simple and efficient means for accomplishing the objects as above set forth. It is to be understood that the form of preferred embodiment' of our invention, the "numeral 5 designatesa receptacle having "a base portion 6 which consists of a ring,- and is to ne eeen ee e pfeifen-ed exemple ef the sanme, and that various changee 'in @he Shape., Size .end erreeeement ef per@ eey be `resorted to Without departing from 4the spirit of the invention or the scope ,of the sub'oined claim.
