PLIERS Filed oct; '25 1922 Patented Oct. 2, 1923.
UNITED STATES ELIAS AUGUST KAUFFMAN, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. i
ILIERS.
l Application tiled October 25, 1922. Serial No. 596,782.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ELIAS AUGUST KAUFE- MAN, a former subject of the Emperor of German who has forsworn his allegiance to the mperor of Germany 'and declared his intention of becoming a citizen of the United States, and therefore is not now a citizen or subject of any country, and is a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pliers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates l'fo pliers, and has for its object the provision of a device of this character having a compound leverage connection between the Shanks and jaws thereof which greatly enhances the effective power of the device.
Another object of the invention is to provide connections between the pivots of the levers so that if one or the other of the jaws should become broken or otherwise unfit for use, such jaw may be removed from the pliers and another jaw substituted therefor.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and 1n which,
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the invention;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the invention on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a plan view ofthe invention, showing same in open position.
Referring to the drawings, 10 and 11 represent the shanksor handles of the pliers, each of which has its inner end broadened, ,the shank 10 preferably being provided with forked ears 12 and 13, and the shank 11 being provided with tongues 14 and 15. The tongue 14 is adapted to nicely engage between the ears 12, there being a rivet 16 extending through said ears and said tongue so as to pivotally connect the shanks 10 and 11 together.
Jaws 17 and 1:8 are provided, the jaw 17 preferably having tongues 19 and 20, and the jaw 18 having ears 21 and 22. Tongue 20 is adapted to fit nicely between the ears 22 of the jaw 18 and is pivotally` held in position by vmeans of a rivet 22', which pivotally connects the jaws 17 and 18 together. The cars 21 of the jaw 18 are adapted to snugly receive the tongue 15 on the shank 11, being 'pivotally connected together by a rivet 23, and the ears 13 of the shank 10 are adapted to receive the tongue 19 therebetween, rivet 24 pivotally connect ing said members together. The jaws 17 and 18 may be provided with cutting blades 25 as shown, if desired.
The pivotal connections described are of the tongue and fork or tongue and groove type, and are particularly useful in the present instance as they prevent lateral movement of the parts with respect to each other.
It will also be noticed that the above described arrangement is such that the pivots 16, 22, 23 and 24 are all located equidistant from a common central point, thereby obtaining the maximum leverage without altering the conformation of the pliers. An important feature of theinvention lies in the fact that if the jaws 17 and 18 should become broken or otherwise damaged or unfit for use, the same may be removed from the pliers by taking out the rivets, and a similar jaw substituted therefor, it being my purpose to provide a large number of similar interchangeable Shanks and jaws which may be employed without disturbing the effectIve operative arrangement of the device.
Pliers made in accordance with my invention are extremely simple and particularly efficient in ope-ration, and are capable of economical manufacture in large quantities.
.While I have illustrated and described. the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the Scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new 'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. Pliers of the character described including shank portions disposed side by side, said shank portions being provided with oppositely disposedbroadened inner ends of the same character, there being means for pivoting the adjacent portions of said broadened ends together; jaws disposed side by side and having oppositely disposed broadened inner ends of the saine character as said shanks, there being means for pivotally connecting the adjacent portions of said jaws together, and for piv0tally connecting the adjacent portions of the inner ends of said jaws and said shanks.
2. Pliers ol" the character described including shank portions disposed side by side, said Shanks being provided with oppositely disposed broadened inner ends of the same character; spaced fork members on the broadened end of one of said shank members; spaced tongues on the broadened end of the other of said shank members; means for pivot-ally connecting the adjacent tongue and fork members of said Shanks; jaws disposed side by side and having oppositely disposed inner ends of the saine character as said Shanks, portion of one of said jaws being provided with spaced ,fork members and the other of said jaws being provided with spaced tongue members, the adjacent tongue and fork members of said jaws being pivotally the broadened connected together, and the adjacent tongue and fork members of said jaws and said shanks being pivotally connected together.
3. Pliers of the eharacterdescribed comprising a shank having spaced forked members thereon; a second shank having spaced tongues thereon, one of which is adapted to engage one of said forked members; a'jaw having tongues thereon, one of which is adapted to engage the adjacent forked member on said first mentioned shank; and another jaw member having spaced forked members thereon adapted to engage the ren'iaining tongue of Said shank member, and the remaining tongue of the related jaw member, all of said tongues and forks being pivotally connected together. I
VIn testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ELIAS AUGUST KAUFFMAN.
