Description

Patented Nov. Zl, i922.
UNETEE entrant WILLIAM IP.-WHITLEY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR. TO RAWLINGS MFG. 60., 013 ST. LOUIS, MISSGURI, A CORPORATION OF MISSOURI.
BASEBALL GLOVE.
Application filed July 11, 1921.
To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM P. Wr rr- LEY, a citizen of the United $tates, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Base-- ball Gloves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to baseball gloves and has for its main object to provide a baseball glove that will not rip at the joints or crotches between the fingers and between the thumb and first finger.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a front ele vational View of a baseball glove constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view, taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows; and
Figures 3 and i are detail sectional views, taken on the lines 3-3 and ll, respectively, of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings Wl11Cl1 1llLlS trate the preferred form of my invention, A designates tl e thumb of the glove and B designates the palm portion which is provided with four integral extensions 6 that form the front sides of the fingers C, all of said portions being formed of leather. lhe thumb is joined to the palm portion B by a seam 1 and the rear portions of the fingers C which are also formed of leather are joined to the front portions 6 of the fingers by seams 9,. in order to prevent the glove from ripping at the joints between the fiugers and at the joint between the first linger and thumb, I have provided it with reinforcing devices that are arranged on the inside of the glove and which are of such a character that they add very little to the cost of manufacturing the glove and do not make the glove cumbersome or stiff at the crotches between the fingers and bet-ween the thumb and first finger. Preferably the reinforcing devices consist of pieces of nonstretchable fabric, preferably shortstrips of tape, arranged on the inside of the glove crosswise or transversely of the seams which they reinforce.
As shown in Figure 2, the seam 1 that Serial No. 488,76
joins the thumb in to the palm portion B of the glove is reinforced at the crotch or joint between the thumb and first finger by a nonstretchalole device, preferably a piece of fabric tape 3 that extends transversely of the seam 1, and which is secured in position by one or more rows of stitches 3 arranged at opposite sides of the scam 1. The reinforcing devices for the oints or crotches between the fingers C also consist of nonstretchable devices, preferably pieces of fabric tape l arranged on the inner side of the glove crosswise or transversely of the seam which they reinforce and secured in position by one or more rows of stitches a.
A leather glove f the construction above described will not rip at the points which are subjected to greatest strains when the glove is in use, namely, the joints or crotches between the fingers and between the first finger and thumb, owing to the fact that these portions of the glove are reinforced in such a way-as to prevent them from ripping. Moreover, such a glove is pliable as the conventional unreinforced baseball glove, owing to the fact that the reinforcing devices consist of small strips ofnon-stretch able tape or other suitable material arranged on the inner side of the glove and secured in position by rows of stitches.
If desired an outside reinforcing device 5 can be arranged over the seam l at the crotch between the thumb :1 and the first finger of the glove, said oil de reinforcing device 5 extending longitiulinally of said seam at rigl'it angles to the inside reinforc ing device 3 and being secured to the tlnimb and to the palm portion of the glove by a row of stitches 5. i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A baseball glove, comprising a palm portion, a thumb portion joined to said palm portion by a seam an outside reinforcing device arranged over said seam and extend ing longitudinally of same at the crotch be tween the thumb and first finger, and an i in side reinforcing device consisting of a piece of nonstretchable material arranged crosswise of said seam at said crotch.
