.l ATl ll l l JOHN A. FENNEY, OF MALDEN, MASSACHUSETTS.
HOOP.
Application filed April 1,
To aZZ whom-it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN A. PENNEY, a j men of the United States, residing at Maiden, in the county oi? Middlesex and State or liulassachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hoops, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has reference to a hoop for barrels.
My object is to produce a hoop in the nature 01 asplit band whose ends may be readily connected without the employment of rivets or analogous devices.
A further object is to produce a barrel hoop in the nature of a split band in which one of the ends thereof is formed to provide a T-head and the other provided with a substantially T-shaped slot through the longitudinal passage of which the head is first inserted and then turned to he received in the lateral passage, the shoulders formed on the extensions providing the head contacting the outer wall of the slot to eiiectively sustain the head therein, and thus easily, quickly and securely connect the ends of the hub.
The drawing which accompanies and forms part of this specification illustrates a satisfactory embodiment of the improvement reduced to practice, and wherein Figure l is a perspective view of a barrel hoop in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the strap from which the hoop is formed.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the band ends interlocked.
disclosed in Figure 2 of the drawing, the improved hoop is torniu-al "from a strap of suitable metal, and is rounded upon itself to provide a split band. The band is, of course, of a size to be received around the stavcs oi a barrel.
flu carrying out my invention, I notch the edges, adjacent one oi": the ends of the band to provide the same with a substantially T- 1922. Serial li o. 5&8,655.
shaped head 1. The opposite end of the band, I provide with a T-shaped slot whose longitudinal passage is indicated by the numeral 2, and whose lateral passage is indi. cated by the numeral 3. The lateral passage is disposed adjacent to the outer end of the strap, and the inner walls between the ends or the lateral and the sides of the longitudinal passages are cut at an inward angle, as indicated by the numeral In practice, the band is twisted so that the head 1 may be inserted in the longitudinal passage 2 ot the T-shaped slot and from thence drawn into the lateral passage thereof. The neck 5 of the T-head 1 has its inner edges out angularly, as at T to corre spond with the angle walls, such provision permitting the said neck to be turned in the lateral passage 3 of the "i -shaped slot, to allow the inner straight edges of the head to contact with the outer straight wall provided by the lateral passage 3, and in this manner the ends of the hoop are easily, quickly and effectively connected.
Having described the invention,l claim l. A barrel hoop formed of a strap having one end provided with a T-shaped head and its other end provided with a T-shaped slot to receive the head therein when the strap is brought to band shape.
2. A barrel hoop comprising a strap having one of its ends formed with a T-shaped head, the inner walls 01": the neck of the head being cut angularly, said strap having its opposite end formed with a 'i-shaped slot, the lateral passage of which being disposed adjacent the outer end of the said band. and the inner walls of the said lateral. passage being out angularly, and said "l -shaped slot designed to receive therein the T-slnuied head when. the strap is brought to band shape.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature.
JOHN A. PENNEY.
