EDWIN C. JOHNSON, OF SOUTH PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN ICE-TONGS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,916, dated September 16, 1873 g application led March 12,1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN C. JOHNSON, of South Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented an Improvement in Ice-Tongs,.of which the following is 'a specification:
The nature of my invention consists in constructing a pair of ice-tongs with a joint and handle made of cast metal, to which the jaws are attached by being driven into a wedging dovetailed slot, or otherwise. The object of this improvement is to cheapen the cost of making the tongs, which will amount to quite a sum when the. claw-handle and joint are forged in a single piece, as heretofore.
Figure l represents a side view of the tongs. Fig. 2 represents an edge view of the same.
I prefer to cast the two parts which constitute the handles and joint of the tongs of malleable iron, and core out in each ofthe same the slot a., which is made dovetailed in a transverse direction, as shown in Fig. 2, and
also wedge-shaped longitudinally, as shown in Fig.1. The claws B B are made of forged steel, with a head corresponding in form to the slot. a, so that they may be readily fastened to the handles or jointed portion of the tongs by being driven into the slot with -a hammer.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination ofthe handled or jointed portion of a pair of ice-tongs with the claws B B bymeans of a dovetailed and wedge-shaped slot, a, substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, apair of ice-tongs with handles A A and joint 4A made of cast metal, in combination with steel claws B B, substantially as described.
