MAN'M. CORPSTEIN, OF DUBUQIJ'E, IOWA,
CQMBINATION CARRYING CASE AND CAMJE'ING TABLE.
Application filed may 31,
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROMAN M. CoRPs'rnIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a ombination Carrying Case and Camping Table; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a foldable table for camping outfits or picnics and it is an object of this invention to provide a novel table structure that will form a casing when folded for containing the folded legs, and for receiving camping-out paraphernalia, and which can be easily handled or carried in the same manner as a traveling bag.
With these and other objects in view which will become more apparent in the following description and disclosure in the drawings, my'invention comprises the novel structure, combinations and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended cla m.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of my invention, and in which similar reference numerals refer to similar features in the different views:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my table in partially folded position.
Figure 2 is a section through one of the hinged sections illustrating the manner of folding the legs.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional detail showing the manner of pivoting the legs to the table.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the table completely folded.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the table in unfolded position ready for use.
As shown on the drawings:
In the difierent figures of the drawings, T have illustrated one embodiment of my invention and as shown the same comprises a pair of similar box-like sections 1, hinged together by means of the hinges 2, adapting the said sections to be swung into alinement, as shown in Figure 5, to form a table top, or to be folded in superposed relation, as shown in Figure 4:, to provide a case. Each section comprises a base or bottom 3 which Specification of Letters Patent. Pat t d A 2 1922' 1921. Serial No. 473,567.
in the present instance is shown as of rectangular formation, and bordering elements 4 and 5 which form the ends and sides of the box-like sections. The bordering elements 4 and 5 are preferably mortised at one edge, the mortises extending onlv partially through said elements and being of a depth equal to substantially the thickness of the base or bottom 3, as shown in Figures 2 and 3, so that a smooth surface is provided on the outer surface of the bottoms 3 which form the top of the table. Angle braces 6 may be secured in the inner corners to strengthen the box-like sections.
The legs or standards 7 for supporting the box-like sections in an elevated position are pivoted in the outer corners of the boxlike sections, blocks 8 being preferably interposed between the legs and the sides to provide a strengthened wall through WhlCh the pivot bolts 9 pass. The pivoted ends of the legs 7 are are shaped with a radius which should not be greater than the distance of the pivots 9 from the bottom or ends of the box-like sections so that the said legs can be folded in the box-like sections, as shown in Figure 2. In order that the legs can be readily folded in superposed relation, the pivots 9 in each section are staggered, or spaced apart with respect to a plane parallel to the base 3 and passing through one of said pivots, as clearly shown in Figure 2. As shown in Figure 1, the left hand legs can be first folded into the box-like section until they rest substantially upon the bottom 3 and adjacent the elements 5. The right hand legs can then be folded in superposed relation upon the left hand legs, as is obvious from an inspection of Figure 2.
When the legs have been folded in the box-like sections, a large amount of space remains for provisions or other campingout paraphernalia. The two sections can be swung together and releasably locked by any suitable means such as the snap latch 10 illustrated in Figure 1, and each section is provided with a handle 11 positioned adjacent each other which can be readily simultaneously grasped by the hand.
It is characteristic of my improved table that the same is a unitary structure which can be readily folded in the form of a suit or carrying case and thus serve a two-fold purpose.
I am aware that numerous details of consection lying in the same vertical plane and i being staggered with respect to a horizontal plane whereby one leg of each section may be folded in' superimposed relation upon the other leg in each section.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' ROMAN M. CORPSTEIN.
