Description
E. G. HOWARD.
RUBBER GARTER.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 15, 1920.

STATEfi EDWARD G. HOWARD, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
RUBBER GARTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
- Application filed September 16, 1920. Serial No. 410,606.
T allgvltom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD G. HOWARD, a citizen of. the United States, and residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rubber Garters, of
which the following specification is a full disclosure;
This invention relates to an elastic band, garter or similar article, for use in binding or holding wearing apparel or for similar.
uses.
An object of the invention is to provide a band of elastic material, preferably of pure rubber, to form a waterproof garter, with minute button-receiving perforations at its opposite ends to receive a double-headed button; for adjustably connecting the ends of the band; The band, for inserting the button heads through the perforations, is-expanded to elongate the perforations or openings, admitting the head of the button to be passed therethrough.
Another object is to provide the buttonreceiving openings or perforations of a considerable reduced size comparative to the diameter of the button shank, causing the shank, reenforcing the material and preventing tearing at the perforation.
Other objects and certain advantages will be revealed in the description and reference is made to the drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Fig. 1 is a face view of the elastic band in fiat condition, showing the button openings therein.
Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the attaching button in position.
Fig. 3 is a sectional edge view.
Fig. 4 shows a portion ofthe band in stretched condition, illustrating the elongation of the button openings, for engagement over the button.
Fig. 5 illustrates the manner of placing the button openings over the button.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional view showing the head or crimp formation of the elastic material when in contact around the button-shank.
Fig. 7 is a view, similar to Fig. 6, showing the protective bead or crimp formed at the periphery of the button opening as when the band is in stretched condition encircling a body.
The numeral 1 designates a strip of rubber, 2 a single button opening or perforation placed at one end of the band, 3 a series or row of openings or perforations at the opposite end, and 4 the button, preferably of double-headed form. The button opening 2 is elongated by stretching and the button 4 inserted, as shown in Fig. 3. Any one of the series of openings 3 is then elongated by stretching, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, and the head of the button passed through the expanded opening, connecting the opposite ends of the band, to form a continuous crimp annularly at the button opening and lap upon the inserted shank of the button, material to crimp and lap aroundthe button as shown in Fig. 3. This reenforces the material around the button opening, bringing the surface face of the material in engagement with the shank. thereby reducing the liability of tearing the material, which might occur if a pulling strain was brought directly against the edge of the material.
Having described my invention, I claim:
A garter comprising a button having a shank, a band of rubber material, having button-receiving perforations at its opposite ends, for connecting the ends of the band, the perforations being of reduced size to the size of the button shank inserted through the perforation, whereby the material must be expanded to enlarge the opening for admitting the button.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name, as attested by the two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD G.. HOWVARD.
