Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May so, 1922.
Original application filed January 6, 1921, Serial No. 435,487. Divided and this application filed March 30, 1922. Serial No. 548,118.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I. SINCLAIR ToUsEY, a citizen of the United States. and resident of New York city. New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Golf Clubs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention concerns means for eliminating the. noise resulting from the rapid 1o motion of a golf club through the air. This noise is objectionable when practicing indoor golf. The noise or swish may be likened to that produced by a switch cutting the air at a high rate of speed. When practicing golf indoors this noise is objectionable to occupants of adjacent rooms, or others and my invention is intended to furnish a silencer which will avoid this objection and also to secure, for a given power applied. amore rapid motion of the club due to the lessended air resistance and consequently an increase in the distance that the golf ball will be driven.
The figure represents a perspective view of a golf club with my invention combined therewith.
In carrying out my invention in one form I employ a series of circular ridges 2 about the shaft of the club, say, at one inch apart. These ridges may be formed on the shaft or may be applied thereto in any suitable manner and of any suitable material. They may be of soft cotton cord, say one eighth inch in diameter or may be of wire of 22 gauge and these may be laid in single or double strands.
Whether the noise mentioned is due to yibration of the stick or to some other cause as, for instance the creation of a vacuum on the rear side of the rapidly moving stick and the rush of the air thereinto, the result of my 40 experimentation is that the swish is eliminated, and indoor golf can be practiced in silence with the means I have described above.
The use of my invention also results in a more rapid movement of the club, for a given power applied thereto, as compared with clubs not having my improvement and hence other things being equal a longer drive will result from the use of my improved club in respect to that which will be given by an ordinary club.
I claim:
A golf club having its shaft below the handle part, provided with ring shaped spaced apart protuberances, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
SINCLAIR TOUSEY.
