To all whom it my concern:

Be it known that I, THEorHILUs 'HoK- KANEN, a citizen of Republic of Finland, and a resident at the borough of Manhattan, in the city of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Valise, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to valises of that type commonly known as suitcases, hand bag, etc. and its primary object resides in the provision of receptacles of this character coni'eyable on wheels so that it will not be necessary to carry them.

Another object of the invention is the provision of such receptacles with detachable wheels, so designed as to be reliable. con 'vcnient in use, composed of. comparatively few parts and occupy a small space.

With these and other objects in view the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described here-- after and set forth in the claims appended hereto.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one embodiment of the invention as applied to a suitcase, and wherein similar reference characters are employed to designate the corresponding parts;

lVhile I have shown the invention in its embodiment as a suitcase it is to be understood that the shape and construction of the receptacle is independengof this invention and the invention applies equally well to valises and receptacles of anyother type.

Referring to drawings numeral 6 designates a receptacle, a suitcase arbitrarily chosen for the case illustrated, provided with a handle 7 of usual construction at one end and metallic channel shaped member 8 securely fastened on opposite end. The U- shaped clip 9 is securely fastened on channel 8 in the manner illustrated on the drawings to form a pocket for the rec'ep-tion of a hearing bracket 10. The locking spring 11 is also securely mounted on channel 8 at 12 and adapted to hold the bent end of the bearing bracket 10 between the channel 8 and clip 9 as illustrated. Tension in the locking spring 11 is adapted to hold it in the posi-' tion indicated by full lines 'on Figure 3. The hole 17 is provided in the channel 8 to enable the locking spring 11 to be pressed to a position permitting insertion of the bracket 10. The bearing bracket 10 carries wheels 13 and 13 on bearing pins 14 and 14 thereby forming a carriage or truck. The wheels 13 and 13 are provided with" rubber tires 15 and 15' and are adapted to revolve freely and independently of each other on pins 14; and 1a which are securely fastened in the bearing bracket 10 with pins 16 and 16. As pointed out the wheels with their bearmg bracket 10 are detachable in a unit from the valise bypressing the locking spring 11 to a retracted position. Similarly the wheel set is attached by pressing said spring and sliding the bracket 10 inits place where it is automatically locked by the spring 11. The wheel set once detached may be packed inside the valise or elsewhere.

The relative location of handle 7 and set of wheels on valise is preferably such that the center of gravity of the receptacle 6 will fall approximately on the line joining the first two.

To convey my improved valise on wheels it is to be held by handle 7 in such a position that its center of gravity is over the wheels thus transmitting nearly all the weight of the valise to the wheels and a very slight force is required to move it along.

As-pointed out the two wheels used are adapted to turn independently feach other to enable the valise to turn on "wheels anyway desired.

While I have shown two wheels which I 1 0 now consider the best combination, any desired number of wheels may be used. The handle 18 is provided for carrying the valise while the wheels have been detached. In the case of hand bags the wheels are most cone.

andwhile I have described the valise which ll now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the combination is only illustrative and such changes as are within the scope of appended claims may be made when desired.

Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 4 baggage of a carriage therefor, a clip mounted on said article of baggage, said carriage including a bar received in said clip, and a leaf spring for engaging one end of said, bar.

2. The combination with an article of baggage of a carriage therefor, a laterally extending member secured to said carriage, means on said article of baggage for receiving said laterally extending member, and a leaf spring adapted to engage an end of said member.

3. The combination with an article of baggage having a pocket formed thereon of a carriage therefor, said carriage includin a portion received in said pocket, and a lea l. The cdmb'iiation with an article of spring secured to the article of baggage opposite one end of the pocket.

4. The combination with an article of baggage of a carriage therefor a U-shaped clip mounted on said article of baggage, said carriage including an angular member received in said U-shaped clip, and a leaf sprin for engaging said angular member.

5. n article of baggage having a pocket adapted to receive a portion of a carriage, and means mounted on the article of bagage opposite the pocket and spaced thererom for locking the carriage in place.

6. An article of baggage having a pocket adapted to receive a portion of a carriage,

and a leaf spring mounted on said article of baggage opposite the pocket and spaced therefrom.
