' ALI-795D H.AD 0LPH- ATTORNEY UNITED STATES ALFRED H. ADOLPH, OF SAN.FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINATION FILE HANDLE AND JOINTER.
Application filed October 19, 1920.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that ALFRED H. AnoLrH, citizen of Canada, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, has invented new and useful Improvements in Combination File Handles and Jointers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a file holder, and particularly pertains to a combined file and j ointer.
It is the principal object of the present invention to provide a file holder which may be clamped at the end of a. file to permit a-file to'be used for ordinary purposes, and
which is further designed tosecure the file in a position to allow it to be used in joining the teeth of a saw, and as guided by the file handle.
The present invention contemplates the use of'a handle, having a clamping ring thereon and file receiving openings in the end and transversely through the body thereof, said handle being longitudinally split from its end to the transverse opening, in order to receive the blade of the saw, the clamping ring being designed'to secure a file within the end of the handle or within the transverse opening adjacent adjoining slot.
The invention is illustrated by way of example by'the accompanying drawings, in which: 7 p
' Fig. 1 is a view inside elevation showing the'handle as applied to the file for common use.
Fig. 2 is a view of a transverse section through the handle, as seen on the line 22, F 1.'
Fig. 3 is a view in elevation showing the handle of the file assembled for use as a jointer.
Fig. 4 is a view in section and elevation showing the clamping action of the slip ring as'seen on the line kt of Fig. 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 10 indicates a handle adapted to receive a file 11. This file is formed with the usual tapered shank 12, by which it may be held within the end of the handle. A longitudinally extending and tapered opening 13 is formed in the end of the handle to receive this shank, it being understood that the handle is preferably formed of wood Approximately midway the length of the handle a transverse opening 14 is formed. This opening has a fiat face 15,

extending at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the handle, and at the end of the opening adjacent the end of the handle normally receiving-the file. By reference to Fig. 1, it will be noted that the surface of the handle surrounding the opening 13 is tapered and enlarged as it reaches the end of the handle, thus forming the surface 16. The portion of the handle adjacent this tapered surface is reduced in diameter, as compared with the handle end 17, to form a shoulder 18. This shoulder provides an abutment for a slip ring 19, which may be used to clamp the file within the transverse passage-way 14, of the end opening 13. The edge of the ring intended to rest upon the shoulder 18 is square, while the opposite edge is formed with tapering cam faces 21, for purposes which will be hereinafter described.
The handle is split through longitudinally to form a slot 20, extending from the center of the flat face 15 of passageway 11, to the end of the handle. and directly through the center of the longitudinal opening 13. This slot forms a double purpose of permitting the handle to yield and to become more firmly clamped around the shank 12 of the file when the shank is inserted within the opening 13, and to provide a guide slot for a saw blade when the file is inserted through the passage-way 1 1.
In operation of the present invention when the handle is to be used in connection with a file secured to the end thereof, the shank 12 of the file inserted'within the opening 13, after which the slip ring is forced up along the tapered face 16 to wedge the halves of the handle together and to more firmly bind the shank in fixed position relative thereto. Vhen the handle and file are to be used for thepurpose'of joining theteeth of the saw the slip ring 19 is withdrawn from the end of the handle to release the file and is brought to seat against the shoulder 18. The file may then be withdrawn from the opening 13 and passed through the passage way let with one of its fiat faces seated against the flat side 15 of the passage way. After this has been done the slip ring 19 may be rotated in a direction to wedge the tapered face 21 thereof against the back of the file, and to securely bind the file against the side 15 of the passageway. While held in this position the file will be secured at right angles to the longitudinal axis of th e saw'joined as the handle holdsthe'fiat face of the file against the edge of the saw blade. It will thus be seen that the handle "here disclosed while it is simple andiner; ensive yet provides adequate means for receiving a file to be in longitudinal alignment with the handle, or at right angles thereto, and to securely clamp the file in either of said positions, for the purposes set forth.
7 While I have shown the preferred form of my invention, it will be understood that various changes may be made in the combination, construction and arrangement of parts, with out departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
I claim: I V
- 1. In combination a file, a handle therefor and means for detachably securing the file to the handle in either a longitudinalalignment, or a transversely disposed position thereto.
2. In combination with the file, a handle having a transverse opening therethrough, and a longitudinal opening in the end thereof, and fastening means for detachably so:
= curing the end of the file in the longitudinal opening, or the body of the file through the transverse opening.
3. In combination with the file, a handle having a transverse opening'therethrougl'i,
. and a longitudinal opening in theend thereof, and fastening means for detachably securing the end of the file'in the longitudinal opening, or the body of'the file through the transverse opening, and a slotted passage way formed longitudinally of the file through the longitudinalopening in the end of the: file, and terminating with the transverse opening. i I
4. In combination with a file, a handle 7 having an opening in one end thereof, and a.
transverse passage-Way through the body thereof for receiving the file, the portion of the file from the transverse passage wayto the end of the longitudinal opening being centrally slotted, an enlarged tapered portion forming the end of the handle around the longitudinal opening, a shoulder formed upon the handle below the transverse open? ing, and a ring member adapted to be wedged upon the tapered portion of the end to clamp the file the longitudinal opening, or to be seated upon the shoulder of the handle to clamp the-file in t-he transverse pasag -Way- .o
5. In 'combinationwitha file, a handle having an opening in one end thereof, and a ing, a ring member adapted-to be wedged upon-the tapered portion of the end-to. clamp the file in the longitudinal opening, or to be .seated'upon the shoulder of thehandle to clamp the file in the transverse passage-way, and cam surfaces uponthe ring member whereby rotation 'of'thering will act to clamp the file in thetransverse passage-way. 6. in comblnation witha file of triangular cross section, a handle having a'longitudinal f opening to receive a shank ofthe file, and a transverse opening through which the body of the file maybe inserted, said transverse opening havlng flat side ad acent the open;
ing against which a flatface of the file may be seated, aflongitudinal split formed centrally of the file handle, and extending from the center of the flat face of thetransvlerse opening along the longitudinal opening and to the end of the handle, an -enlarged-tapered portion formed upon-the handle and around the longitudinal opening, a shoulder formed along the handle, andnpon the opposite side of the transverse opening fromits fiatface,
and a ring member adapted .tobe movedv longitudlnally to 'engagethe tapered portion of the handle and clamp the shank of the file within the longitudinalopening, or'to seat upon the saidshoulder, and by rotation to clamp the file through the transverse pass sage-Way.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
