Specification of Letters Patent.

To all ivhom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT L. HOWARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montello in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Support, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to educational appliances, it being an object of the invention to provide an appliance to be employed in drawing classes for providing the true length of a line, and to illustrate the fore- A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character including a transparent casing, and adjustable bracket supported within the casin for sup ortin g P g the object under consideratlon.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 illustrates a side elevational view partly in section, of the support, forming a part of the invention.
Fig. 2 illustrates a side elevational view of the support, showing the same within the glass casing.
Fig. 3 illustrates a plan view of one of the disks forming a part of the base of the suport. p Fig. 4 illustrates a disk forming the op-- posite section of the base.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the
This base of the support includes an upper disk 6 and a lower disk 7, the lower disk having connection with the base 5 as by means of the screw 8, the upper disk 6 whlch is mounted on the lower disk v7, being secured to the lower disk as bymeans of the bolts 9 passing through suitable openings formed in the disks, the disks being moved into close engagement wlth each other, as by means of the wlnged nuts 10.
The support also includes a shank 11 which is provided with a head 12 secured in a suitable openlng in the upper disk 6, the outer end of the swivel being provided with a head 13, which head is designed to accommodate one; end of a sectional clamping member, whlch clamping member includes opposed sections 15 and 16, which have cooperating threaded portions designed to accommodate the threaded collar 17 which connects the secions.
The. support also includes a solid or link section 18 having heads 19 formed on its respective ends, which heads are received by the sectional link member 14, which includes opposed sections 20 and 21 respectively, the sections being hollow, as shown more clearly. by Fi 5 of the drawings to accommodate the coiled spring 22 which has its ends contacting with the ends of the tubes 23 which in turn have curved extremities conforming to the curvatures of the heads 19 so that the pressure exerted on the tubular members 23 will urge them into engagement with the heads 19 to grip the heads and restrict movement of the link section with respect to the hollow sections.
At the outer extremity of the support, is
a connecting link 24 which also is provided with a head 19 which is frictionally held' within the hollow section by the tension of v the coiled spring 22, a portion of the link 24 being threaded as at 25 whereby the same may be positioned within a suitable opening provided in an object being demonstrated.
The opposed sections 20 of the link member 14 are connected by means of the threaded collar 26, which operates over the adjacent threaded extremities of the section, whereupon the sections may be moved to- Ward and away from each other to in crease or diminish the tension of the coiled spring 22.
From-the foregoing it is obvious that due to the construction of the supporting mem-' her, an object such as indicated by the reference character 27 in Fig. 2 of the drawings, may be supported at various angles, to brmg the edges thereof to various positions with respect to the casing, which houses the support.
This casing includes transparent side walls 28 which are connected as by means of the hinge members 29 so that when an object is traced through the transparent sides of the casing, the casing may be extended to a relatively fiat position, so that the markings of one side may be compared with the markings of the adjacent side.
In the use of the device, a suitable object to be studied is positioned on the threaded portion of the link 24, and the support is moved to the desired position, whereupon a student may trace the contour of the object on the transparent Walls of the casing which houses the support and object.
Due to the construction of the support, it is obvious that the object may be moved to various positions to provide the length of various lines.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a device of the character described, a supporting member including a base, a pair of sectional link members, a shank having a ball at one end thereof, said ball being disposed within one of the sectional link members, a solid link having a ball formed integral with its respective ends, said balls being positioned within the sectional link members, tubes disposed Within the sec tional link members and engaging the balls, and spring members within the sectional link members for contacting with the tubular members to force the tubular members into contact with the balls of the solid link members.
' 2. In a device of the character described, a support including sectional link members, a solid link member connecting the sectional link members, each of said sectional link members including opposed sections having threaded extremities, threaded collars operating over the threaded extremities to connect the sections, and resilient means within the sectional link members for forcing the ends of the solid link members into engagement with the inner walls of the ends of the sectional link members, to restrict movement of the link members with respect to each other. e
