COLLAR-CLASP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1921.
Application filed October 7, 1920. Serial No. 415,242.
, provements in Collar-Clasps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification. This invention relates to collar Clasps especially'designed for fastening soft collars but also adapted for other purposes.
It is the object of the invention to simplify the construction of a double clasp of.
the type shown wherein the two clasps are arranged at opposite ends of the device and the lever arms for opening them are disposed near each other in the middle portion of the fastener. Another object is to improve the means of pivoting the members of the clasps together so that said pivots will have fewer parts and be more durable. A further object is to provide a double clasp with a hinge connection adapting it to be used as cuff links and elsewhere if desired.
The invention; will be first hereinafter described in. connection with the accompanying drawings, which constitute part of this specification, and then more specifically defined in the claims at the end of the description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views 2- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a double clasp made substantially in accordance with this invention. 4 t
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. I
Fig. 3 is a cross section taken through one of the pivots of the clasps and drawn to a larger scale to more clearly show the formation of the pivots and means of mounting the springs thereon.
ig. 4 is a longitudinal section of a modified form of double clasp, and
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of another modified form of the invention especially adapted for use as cuff links.
Referring first to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the double clasp there illustrated comprises an integral side member 1 having jaws 2 and 3 formed at its opposite ends to cooperate respectively with other jaws 4 and 5 pivoted at 6 and 7, respectively, to said member 1. The aws are preferably serrated, as shown in order to take a firmer grip on the collar or other garment on which the device may be used. The pivoted jaws 4 and 5 have operating lever arms 8 and 9, respectively, extending toward one another so that they can be moved simultaneously with the same finger when attaching or detaching the device to a garment or collar.
The pivots 6 and 7 for the hinged jaws are formed by making cup-shaped depressions 10 in sides of the member 1 into which similar protuberances 11 on the inner faces of the sides of the jaws 41 and 5 snugly fit, as shown best in Fig. 3. These depressions or protuberances constitute centering means or bearings for the coiled portions 12 of springs 13 which bear against the member 1 and lever arms of the jaws 4. and 5, asshown in Fig. 2, for pressing the jaws shut.
As shown in Fig. 4, instead of separate coiled springs 13 at the opposite ends of the device, a single bowed spring 14 maybe used, the same having its middle portion suitably secured to the member 1, as at 15,
and its ends bearing against the lever arms 8 and 9 of the movable jaws 4 and 5, so as to press said jaws into engagement with the jaws 2 and 3 on the member 1. v
To render the doubleclasp capable of serving in lieu of cuff links, as well as for other purposes, the member 1 may be made in two parts 16 and 17, as shown in Fig. 5, said parts being suitably hinged together at 18 so that they may be swung to a desired angle. Otherwise the device may be made as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a clasp, the combination with opposed jaws having overlapping side portions provided with pivotally engaging pro-' tuberances and depressions integral therewith, and a spring for pressing the jaws together, said spring having a coiled bearing portion centered on said pivoting parts of the jaws.
2. In a double clasp, the combination Q 1,a7s,o1e
with-a rigid member having jaws atits op- .pressions integral therewith for pivoting posite end portions, of separate jaws to cosaidseparate jaws to the rigid member, and operate with the jaws on the ends of said springs for presslng the jaws together have 10 member said separate jaws having side porin their bearings on said pivoting parts.
5 tions overlapplng the sides of the rigid n testimony whereof I have signed-my member, said overlapping portions having name'to this specification. pivotally engaging protuberances' and de- FREDERICK KOHN.
