Be it known that I, JOHN V. Hons, a citi- I zen of the United States, residing at Cleve? land, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Dispensingartons, ofwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact description. This invention relates to a carton which serves not only the purpose of a receptacle in which articles ma be packed and stored, but also is provide with certain features which enable'it to be used as a dispensing carton, from which the goods may be displayed and removed as sales are made.

The object of the invention is to provide a carton which has certain features partcularly adapting it for this use. Generally speaking, the invention may be said to comprise the elements and combinations thereof set forth in the accompanying claiins.

Referring to Fig. 1, the body of thecarton may be indicated generally at 1. This body is provided with a topv face 2, forming a part of which is a collapsible cover, such as indicated at 31 This cover is cutfrom the portion-forming the top surface or face of v the carton, and is folded adjacent the middle portion, 'and is provided with slots which engage with corner pieces suchas indicated at 4, these corner pieces serving to hold the cover in substantially vertical position. The

cover may carry advertising matter-descriptive ofthe goods which are contained within the carton. The removal of the cover and the positioning of thev cover as shown in Fia. 1 exposes -the articles within the carton.

Fxtending` from the body of the carton there are two easel members one of which is shown at 5 in Fig. 1, there being a corresponding easel member secured to the opposite portion of the carton. These easel members are provided with two sides indicated .at 6 and 7, which sides extend atv an angle to spread by a retaining member, which does not appear in Figs. 1 and 2, but which will be later explained, which retaining member is provided `with projections such as indicated'at 8 that extend through suitable slots formed in the easel members. f

The easel members support the body of the carton in such position as to permit an easy display and observation of the articles within the carton, and the gentle incline given to the body may be sufficient tocause the arti cles within the body as rthey are removed by sale to descend toward the' lower part of the carton, so as to be easy of access to p a purchaser.

Because the carton when supported in the position shown in Fig. 2 is in a more nearly vertical position, it becomes desirable to pro vide some means for preventing the articles contained within the carton from any danger of fallingout. This feature is taken care of by the provisiony of strips 9 which extend suliciently far from the edges of the carton to overhang the ends of articles which may be contained within the carton, and so prevent their falling out of the carton. Furthermore, these portions 9 in connection with the sides and bottom of the carton form guides which suitably guide the articles within the carton, and they may descend in the carton when these articles are remove at the lower part Of the carton, and it will be observed that provision for the removal of these articles is made at the lower part ,of the carton byl providing an opening 10.

Fig. 5 shows a blank from which the carton shown in Fig. 1 may be formed. The blank is cut from a single sheet of material `secured to the body opening 16, as indicated at 17.

from which the carton is to be formed: the blank provides a face portion 12. primary side members 13, secondary side members 14. a back 15, a retaining member 16, and supporting members 5 and the foldable cover Of course there are corner folds which are provided on the blank. but these being merely incident, no particular description need be given of them. The blank is folded upon the line shown to be dotted in the ligure. As before explained the retaining members 16 when the blank is properly folded are in such position that the extensions 8 thereof will extend through the slots 5fl formed in the supporting members 5. Thus the supporting members 5 are rigidly of the carton.

The=cover is formed by cutting all around the edges shown in full lines. and creasing the material at the points indicated at 3a and 3b. This permits the cover 3 to fold along the line 3al and along the lines 3b. The cover at the lower end is provided with cut portions 3 through which cut portions the extensions 2 pass when the cover is in its folded position.

The blank shown in Fig. 6 is in all particulars the same as the blank shown in Fig. 5, with the exception that that portion or' the blank which is to form the top of the carton is provided with a cut out portion indicated at 16, which cut out portion is enlarged transversely with respect to the rhe opening 16 in the top portion is such as to provide the extensions 9 which retain the articles within the carton and guide them as they descend toward the opening 17 from which opening articles may be removed as they are sold.

It will be seen from the foregoing description that the body of the carton may be supported in either of two positions. and that the easel supportingmembers 5 are so fashioned as to permit the body of the carton to be thus supported, the difference between the two forms of the carton herein indicated are merely differences in the manner of forming the top face of the carton.

Having described my invention. l claim l. A dispensing carton comprising a body portion adapted to contain articles to be dispensed, easel supporting members for the said body portion and attached to the body portion, retaining means hinged upon the ody portion engaging the easel supporting members at portions thereof which are remote from the box thereby joining the easel members to each other.
