JAR AND CLOSURE THEREFOR.

To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, QUINCY A. GATES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vilkes-Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jars and Closures Therefor, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to storing vessels, such as fruit jars and closures therefor.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple and eflicient vessel of this character, the cover of which is secured bygiving it a slight turn whereby it is locked to the vessel.

Another object is to provide a vessel and cover of this character with a sealing groove or space formed between the perimeter of the cover and the inner face of the vessel to receive the sealing material, which performs the double function of an auxiliary air excluder and an indicator to show whether the contents remain intact.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope ofwhat is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the embodiment illustrated, a storing vessel in the form of a glass jar 1 is shown, the mouth of which has an annular seat in the form of a ledge 2 on its inner face with- Specification of Letters Patent.

the like, of greater length than width and of a diameter slightly less than that of flange 3 being designed when in operative position to rest on seat 2. This cover 5 is provided at diametrically opposite points on its upper face with beveled side portions 6 which incline gradually upward toward their opposite ends to form cam edges 6 for interlocking engagement with the overhanging lips 4 when the cover is turned so that these edges pass under lips.

This cover 5 has upstanding lugs 7, two of which are preferably shown, and which are designed as finger grips to assist in turnmg the cover to lock or unlock it. The cover is also provided with stops 8 for limiting the turning movement when looking the cover.

By making the cover cam-shape and of less diameter than flange 3 a space is formed around the cover between its perimeter and said flange as shown at 9 which is designed to receive a sealing substance perferably paraffin which when poured into said space forms a perfectairtight connection between the closure and the jar, and should a rubber gasket be used, it may be placed on seat 2, but it is not necessary.

The short sides or beveled portions 6 of cover 5 afford ample space for the positioning of the cover on ledge 2, permitting it to pass the lips 4 as is shown clearly in Figs. 3 and 4 and enlarging the sealing face 9 at diametrically opposite points 10, thus permitting the parafin to be packed tight on opposite sides of the cover and between the long ends thereof. When the cover is positioned as shown in Fig. 3, to lock it, it is given a slight turn toward the right, which causes the cam-like face of the side portions 6 to pass under lips 4 and securely lock the cover on the seat, the projections 7 facilitating this turning operation.

When the top has been locked in the manner above set forth, the paraflin or other sealing substance is poured into the space 9 and completely seals the jar.

When it is desired to remove the closure, the knobs or projections 7 are grasped and the closure turned toward the left until brought into the position shown in Fig. 3, when it may be readily raised from its seat and taken off, it being understood that the turning operation will break up the parafiin or it may be pried from or otherwise loosened in the space if found necessary.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the claimed invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A jar having an annular seat in the neck thereof, lip projections over and above the seat, and a closure body of greater length than width mounted to-turn within the annular seat with its long sides normally engageable under the lip projections to prevent withdrawal of the cover and its short sides spaced inwardlv from the lip projection to permit withdrawal of the cover when the long ends are moved from beneath the said projections.

2. The combination with a jar having an annular ledge or seat formed in the neck thereof and lip projections overhanging the said ledge, of a cam shaped cover of less diameter than the seat to provide a sealing space when inserted into the said seat, said cover being provided with beveled side portions for enlarging the space at opposite points, and means for moving the cover into engagement with the lip projections for locking the plate to the jar.
