POCKET-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 4, 1921.
Application filed August 26, 1920. Serial N0. 406,221.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BEND LEVY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and Improved Pocket-Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in pocket locks, and more particularly to a lock designed for preventing pickpockets from removing the contents of a pocket.
A further object is to provide a pocket lock which may be used on trousers, coats, vests, or any other garment and which will operate to securely lock the pocket, or rather the entrance to the pocket in closed position, so that the contents of the pocket cannot be removed until'the lock is released.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating my improvements applied to side-pocket trousers.
Fig. 2 is a view in section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, showing the parts in slightly different position.
Fig. 3 is a view in rear elevation of the inner portion of the garment, illustrating the pocket in locked position.
While, of course, my invention is adapted for use in connection with a pocket of any garment, I have illustrated the same in connection with the side pocket of a pair of trousers, in which 1 represents the trousers, 2 a pocket, 3 the front flap of the pocket, and 4 the rear wall thereof.
To the inner face of the front flap 3 a plate 5 is secured by lines of stitching 6 or any other securing means, and it is obvious that this plate may be of any material and may be covered or otherwise arranged so as to make the same inconspicuous and to prevent scratching the hand when the latter is inserted in the open pocket.
The plate 5 is provided with a hinged hasp 7, the latter adapted to swing downwardly by gravity and when not in use lie flush with the plate 5 and be out of the way. This hasp has a slot or opening 8 at its free end and is adapted when positioned at right angles to the plate 5, to be projected through an eye 9 in the back wall of pocket 2, and through a slot 10 in said back wall, so as to position the slot or opening 8 of the hasp in alinement with a spring pressed bolt 11.
This bolt 11 is guided by means of a pair of alined sleeves 12 fixed to a plate 18 secured to the wall 4, and is normally pressed into locked position by means of a spring 13. A cord 14 is connected at its lower end to an eye 15 at the upper end of the bolt 11 and is passed through a loop or other form of guide 16 at the upper inner portion of the trousers and has a button or other enlargement 17 at its free end.
In operation, when it is desired to lock the pocket the hasp 7 is positioned at right angles to the plate 5 and projected through the eye 9 and slot 10 into position between the sleeves 12, the bolt 11 being first drawn upwardly by means of the cord 14 and the button or enlargement 17. When the bolt is released, it will spring into locked position projecting through the slot 8 of the hasp 7, and will effectually hold the pocket in locked position preventing any possibility of fraudulent entrance, so that the device will be a sure preventive against the operation of pickpockets and the like. Furthermore, the device will prevent the accidental loss of the contents of the pocket and act as an insurance against loss either from theft or accident.
While I have illustrated one embodiment of my invention, it is, of course, to be understood that the lock and the details thereof may be variously made without departin from my invention, and hence I do not wisli to limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims,
I claim:
1. The combination with a garment having a pocket therein, of a hasp hingedly connected to one member of the pocket, a spring pressed bolt connected to the other member of the pocket and adapted to engage the hasp, and a flexible operating device connected to the bolt.
2. The combination with a garment having a pocket, the latter constituting an outer flap and an inner wall, of a plate secured to the inner face of the flap, a hasp hingedly connected to the plate, a spring pressed bolt mounted on the inner face of the inner wall of the pocket, a pair of guide sleeves through which the bolt projects and between which the hasp is adapted to be located and receive the bolt, said inner Wall of the pocket having a. slot for the accommodation of the hasp, a guide at the upper inner portion of the garment, a flexible device connected to the bolt 10 and projected through said guide, and a button or enlargement on the upper end of said flexible device.
