scones. a. mean, or emenamon, new YORK, Assrenon r0 nivrco MANUFAC- TUBING COMPANY, 1110., OF BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1920.
Application filed October 17, 1919. Serial No. 331,504.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. Tnenn, a a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Operating Devices for Muffler Cut-Outs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hand operating devices adapted particularly for use in connection with a cut-out for an automobile, etc., and the object of the invention is to provide a simple hand operating device which can be ver 1 easily mani ulated and which cannot possibly get out 0 order. In the preferred embodiment, the invention consists of two main parts one of which is a support having a flaring or bell shaped lower end to act as a substitute for a pulley, and the other a handle b which the chain connecting with the mu er cut-out may be pulled against the tension of the spring and secured so as to hold the cut-out in the open position. The invention therefore consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more particularly described and then definitely claimed.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part hereof:
igure 1 is a view of part of an automobile showing a muflier under the floor of the car with my invention in position for use.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my hand operating device detached.
Fig. 3 1s a sectional view of my hand operating device in position for use, with the parts in position in which the cut-out is held 0 en.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by numerals 1 represents a muflier now in use having a cut-out valve 2 normally held against its seat by a spring 3. A chain 4 connects the valve 2 with the hand operating device so that when the chain 4 is drawn taut, the valve 2 of the cut-out will be open. When the chain 4 is released, a spring 6 acts upon the valve 2 to close the same in a manner well understood. The parts of the cut-out mufiler are well known and need no description and my present invention has no relation thereto except to show some means of drawing the chain 4 taut against the tension of the spring, and
of releasing the same so that the spring can perform its function.
My hand operating device consists of two main parts 8 and 10. The part 8 is substantially flat and is preferably provided with three screw holes through which screws may be inserted to secure the member 8 in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3. This part 8 is really a support and has a flared or hell shaped lower end 12 through which the chain 4 passes, as clearly indicated in Fig. 8, so that the flared end 12 acts as a substitute for a pulley. The part 8 is closed at the front end of the flared or hell shaped part 12, and above said port 12 said member 8 is provided with flanges l4 and 16 which extend almost to the top of the support. A lug or hanger 18 is preferably cast integrally with the upper end of the support 8 and with this lug or hanger is adapted to co-act a handle 20 preferably formed of the shape shown in perspective view in Fig. 2. In other words, it is substantially T-shape and to the stem of the T is connected the chain 4 hereinbefore referred to. The upper part of the T forms two handles 22 and 24 of just the proper shape to be grasped by the fingers so that the handle may be drawn upwardly when it is desired to open the cutout. Immediately under the parts 22 and 24 the T-shaped member is provided with an opening 26 which is adapted, when the T- shaped member 10 is moved upwardly, to fit over the lug or bar. er 18, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. hen in this position the shank of the T is entirely out of the bell shaped lower end 12 of the hanger. However, when the operator desires to release the T-shaped member all that he has to do is to slip it oif of the lug or hanger 18 and the spring 6 hereinbefore referred to will draw the chain so as to pull thereon to bring the stem of the T down through the bell shaped end 12 in the position clearly shown in Fig. 1. 'As a matter of fact, the T-shaped handle when released from the lug or hanger 18 would drop by gravity into the position shown in Fig. 1 even if it were not drawn therein by the spring pulling upon the chain 4, but of course the action of the chain draws the lower end of the shank of the handle into the bell shaped lower end as will be evident from the drawings. When the device is placed in position, it is only necessary to secure the supporting member 8 in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3, which can be very easily done, and inasmuch as the bell shaped member takes the place of the pulley, its lower end is prefer ably arranged to extend to just the bottom of the flooring so that all wear will be taken by the casting and the floor thus relieved of any wear.
My invention is so simple that no further description of its operation is necessary.
From the foregoing and accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided a hand operating device which consists of two main parts very simple in construction, quick in operation and yet so durable that it will be almost impossible to get out of order.
VVh-at I claim as my invention is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a hand operating device for mufiier cut-outs comprising a hanger substantially flat whereby it may be easily secured in position and having a bell-shaped lower end and a lug or hanger near its upper end, and a handle adapted to be hung upon said lug or hanger and provided with a chain passing through said bell shaped end, substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a hand operating device for muffler cut-outs comprising a hanger substantially fiat whereby it may be easily secured in position and having a bell shaped lower end and a lug 0r hanger near its upper end, and a T-shaped handle adapted to be hung upon said lug or hanger and provided with a chain passing through said bell shaped end, the T-shaped handle shaped so as to be grasped by the fingers of the user, substantially as described.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a hand operating device for muflier cut-outs comprising a hanger substantially fiat whereby it may be easily secured in position and having a bell shaped lower end and a lug or hanger near its upper end, and a T-shaped handle adapted to be hung upon said lug or hanger and provided with a chain passing through said bell shaped end, the shank of the T-shaped handle being adapted to enter the bell shaped lower end and the upper end of said handle being shaped to be grasped by the fingers of the user, substantially as described.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a hand operating device for muffler cut-outs iomprising a hanger substantially flat whereby it may be easily secured in position and having a bell shaped lower end and a lug or hanger near its upper end, and a T-shaped handle adapted to be hung upon said lug or hanger and provided with a chain passing through said bell shaped end, the shank of the T-shaped handle being arranged to drop through the bell shaped end, with the head of the T resting on the upper part of said bell shaped end, and said T-shaped handle being shaped so that it may be easily grasped by the fingers of the user and elevated and hung upon said lu or hanger, substantially as described.
ln testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE H. TABER.
