Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 15, 1919.
Application led December 13, 1918. Serial No. 266,608.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT J. MANDER- FIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hancock, in the county of Houghton and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wood Sandals, of which the following is a specification.
' The object of my invention is to provide a one-piece wooden sole sandal which can be worn under the foot to protect the sole of the shoe or other footwear from coming in contact with the ground or ioor; to provide metal uppers attached to the wooden sole in an improved manner, and to provide novel and improved means for ventilating and eliminating moisture from the upper side of the sandal. It is also my object to provide plates to prevent vslippage of the sandal.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention- Figure 1 is a perspective of the sandal showing the novel grooving of the upper side of the sandal; and
Fig. 2 is a face view of the bottom of the sole.

Referring to the drawings, I provide a complete sandal member 1 of wood and formed from a single piece. Sandal lis provided with a suitable counter 2, having outer ears 9 and inner ears 10 which are secured to the wood sandal 1 by suitable screws 4. Attached to counter 2 is a suitable ankle strap 5, which carries a suitable buckle 6. I further provide a similar toe strap 11, se-

The top portion of sandal 1 is provided with novel grooves or channels 7 radiating from approximately the center of the sole of the sandal to its edges, for ventilation and to eliminate moisture. The underside of the sandal 1 is provided with metal plates 8, of ribbed construction, to prevent slippage.
A feature of my invention is the disposition of screws 4 in ears 10 and 9, which being driven into the sandal from two angles, obviates splitting of the sole while being worn.
What I claim is:
1. The combination of a wood sandal, and means for fastening the sandal to the foot, said means including a counter having ears, a portion of the ears engaging the outer edge of the heel and a portion engaging the upper surface of the heel, and screws securing the ears to the wood sandal, the screws being obviate splitting of the sole.
2. The combination of a single piece wood sandal, slippage preventing metal plates attached to the bottom of the sole, moisture eliminating grooves on the upper surface of the sole, and means for securing the .sandal to the foot of the wearer, substantially as set forth.
