BOW 0R TASSIEL MAKING AND FOB/MING ATTACHMENT 0R DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J OSEPI-I WEISMANTEL and WILLIAM WEISMANTEL, citizens of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bow or Tassel Making and Forming Attachments or Devices; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and reference being had to the acdrawings, and to characters of comp anylng which form a reference marked thereon, part of this specification.
This invention relates, generally, to improvements in attachments or devices adapted for use in making ribbon-bows, tassels, or the like; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel and simply constructed device for attachment to a table, bench, or the like, in which the vanous elements about which the bows, tassels, or the like, are to be formed, are readily adjustable so that the attachment or device is readily adaptable for making bows or tassels of varying sizes, from the smallest size, such as are used with the sweat-bands in hats, to the larger sizes of bows, used for other puroses.
The present invention, therefore, has for its principal object to provide a novel and simple construction of bow or tassel-making attachment or device of the general character and construction hereinafter more fully set forth; and, furthermore, to provide a bow or tassel-making attachment or device, the parts of which are readily adjustable, for the purpose of making bows or tassels of varying sizes.
The present invention has for its further object to provide a novel construction of bow-making and forming attachment or device which is adapted for making single as Well as double bows, and which may also be used for making what is known as rosettes.
Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present invention- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 18, 1918. Serial 110. 254,623.
WVith the various objects of the present n ventlon in view, the said invention conslsts, prlncipally in the novel bow or tasselmaking and forming attachment or device of the general character hereinafter more fully set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the con struction of the said parts, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fragmentary portion of a table or bench and a bow or tassel-making and forming attachment or device, made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention, said view illustrating the attachment or device'secured in an operative position upon the edge of the table or bench.
Fig. 2 is a front edge view of a pair of bow-forming elements in the form of rods which are used with the various main members of the attachment or device represented in said Fig. 1, these main members, however, having been omitted from said Fig. 2.
Fig. 3 is a similar view of the same rods, showing the said rods, however, differently, positioned when using the attachment or device for making or forming tassels.
Similar characters of reference are employed in the said above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the said drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates a fragmentary portion of a table or bench with which the bow or tassel-making or forming attachment or device is to be used, substantially in the manner indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The said attachment or device is indicated, in general, by the reference character 2, and the same comprises a main standard or post 3, which is suitably secured to so as to extend in an upward direction from the table or bench, before which the operator is seated.
in a single end, but at its One means for securing said standard'or post 3 to the table or bench is by means of a suitably constructed clamping element, as 4, Which is fastened over the marginal edgeportion of the table or bench by means of a clamping screw 5 in any usual manner, said clamping element being made with an extension 6 which is formed with a receiving opening or hub, as 7, for the adjustable disposition therein of the said standard or post 3, which, as will be seen from an inspection of said Fig. 1 of the drawings, is securely held in its vertically adjusted position by means of a thumb-screw 8, or other suitably constructed fastening means.
. Upon its upper end-portion, the said standard or post 3 has mounted thereon, in any suitable manner, a tubular T-shaped element, as 9, in the horizontally disposed portion of which is mounted a horizontally disposed rod Or bar 10. Slidably disposed upon the oppositely projecting portions of said rod or bar 10 are a pair of sleeves or collars l1 and 12, the collar or sleeve 11 being secured in its adjusted position by means of a thumb-screw 13, or other suitable fastening means, and the said collar or sleeve 12 being similarly secured in its adjusted position by means of a thumbscrew 14, or Other suitable fastening means.
As shown in said Fig. 1, the said collar or sleeve 11 has an upwardly projecting lug or extension, as 15, formed with a laterally extending hole, as 16, in which is slidably and adjustably disposed, and is fixed in its adjusted position by means of a thumbscrew 17, or other fastening means, the main shank of a rod or bar 18. At its rear end, the said rod or bar 18 terminates, as at 19, in a single end, but at its opposite end the said rod or bar is forked so as to provide a pair of forwardly projecting fingers 20 and 21, which may be placed apart any distance that may be desired. In like manner, the collar or sleeve 12 has an upwardly projecting lug or extension, as 22, also formed with a laterally extending hole, as 23, in which is slidably and adjustably disposed, and adapted to be fixed in its adjusted position by means of a thumb-screw 24, or other suitable fastening means, the main shank of a rod or bar 25. At its rear end, this red or bar 25 also terminates, as at 26, opposite end the said rod or bar is forked so as to provide a pair of forwardly projecting fingers 27 and 28, corresponding to the previously men tioned fingers 20 and 21, and which may be placed apart any distance that may be desired.
Having, in the foregoing described the general arrangement and construction of the various elements comprising the new bow or tassel-making and formlng attachment or device, We will now briefly describe the use of the said attachment or device in making o forming single, as well as double bows, or tassels of varying sizes.
In making bows of ribbons, the manner of forming the bows is shown more particularly in Fig. 2 of the drawings. All the fingers 20, 21, 27 and 28, after the proper adjustments have been made according to the size of bows desired, are employed, as here shown for making a compound bow, consisting of a large bow and a smaller bow located upon said large bow. In forming small bows, either of the fingers 20 and 21, or 27 and 28, may be employed, or, in other cases bows may be formed either over the fingers 21 and 27, or over the fingers 20 and 28.
In making the various kinds and sizes of bows, it will be understood, that the various fingers 20 and 21, and 27 and 28, are preferably horizontally located; but, in making tassels, as indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, one pair of fingers, as 27 and 28, is vertically disposed before the operator, as shown, the other rod or bar being reversed, so that its single end 19 is extended toward the operator.
The material of which the tassel is to be made is then wound about the parts and tied, as shown, the looped ends of the material formed over the verticallyrdisposed fingers 27 and 28 being finally cut so as to provide the free strands of the tassel.
Of course, it will be evident that the tassel may be made in a reverse manner, the tied portion or knot of the tassel being formed over the fingers 27'and 28 of one rod or bar, and the looped strands, which are finallycut, being formed over the single'end 19 of the other red or bar.
It will further be understood, that either rod or bar 18 Or 25 may be reversed, as may be desired by the operator; and, furthermore, the single-ended portions of the two rods or bars 18 and 25 may be used for the forming and making bows over the same.
Of course, we are fully aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinationsof'the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses ofthe claims which are appended to the said specification. Hence, we do not limit our present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts as described in the said specification, nor do we confine ourselves to the exact details of the construction of'the said parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
