Description

R. M. SMITH.
DETACHABLE COVER FOR CENTRIFUGAL EXTRACTORS.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 1a, 1915.

F 5 ATTORNEKS ROBERT M. SMITH, 015 SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
DETACHABLE COVER FOR CENTRIFUGAL EKTRAC'IORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 8, 1919.
Application filed October 16, 1916. Serial No. 125,763.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT M. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Covers for Centrifugal Extractors, of which the following is a specification.
The present inventionrelates to centrifugal extractors and more particularly to improvements in covers for the baskets of the same, particularly that .typeof centrifugals illustrated in my Patent Number 1,275,486, dated August 13, 1918, and which is adapted for laundries, and by the use of which the operators are prevented from disturbing the contents of the basket after the same is in operation; one wherein the cover is simple in construction, is capable of being detached from the basket and is automatically locked when in position on the open top of the centrifugal basket.
The principal object of this invention is to provide an efficient cover which is capable of ready removal from and positioning over the open top of the centrifugal; one which is particularly adapted for use in connection wit-h the extractors in laundries, one being capable of detachment from the basket, and one which, owing to its simplicity, may be manufactured at little cost. My improved cover fully protects the contents of the hasket while the same is rotating, both from being thrown therefrom or from being disturbed by the operator while the centrifugal is in motion.
With the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
To more fully comprehend the invention, reference is directed to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of an extractor with an embodiment of my invention applied to the cover thereof.
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of an extractor illustrating my improved cover closing the opening in the top of the basket as at 2. A basket 3 is rotatably mounted within the curb on a shaft 5 and the top thereof is open as at 6. The curb is rotated at high speed in any suitable manner, as by the belt? passing around the pulleys 8 and driven by power transmitted to one of the pulleys 9.
An imperforated cover 10, preferably formed of sheet metal, is adapted for closing the opening- 6 in the basket, and the same is of a diameter adapted toextend slightly beyond the peripheral edges of the basket opening 6 nd rests on the main body portion of the basket, and at the same time of a size sufliciently small to pass within the opening 2 in the curb.
The cover 10 carries on its under-face the fixed retaining arms 11 which are down wardly bent within their length, as at 12, and project outwardly at their outer ends, as at 13 in Figs. 2 and 3, of the drawings, to engage under the bead 14 surrounding the opening 6 in the basket.
A manually releasable latch is carried on the underface of the opposite the arms 11 and the same comprises a housing 15 open toward the peripheral edge of the cover. The housing is provided with a depression 16 in which is adapted to slide the catch 17 on the underface of the finger piece 18 which isslidably movable in the housing 15.
' A spring 19 is positioned in the depression 16 and engages the rear wall 20 of the catch 17,,forcing the catch outwardly to engage under the head 14 of the basket at a point opposite the arms 11. Access may be had to the finger-piece 18- through an opening 21 in the cover, said opening also permitting the engagement of the underside of the cover to assist in raising the same for removal from the basket.
In positioning the cover in place, the edge thereof adjacent the arms 11, is rested on the basket adjacent the opening 6 therein and the opposite side is then gradually cover 10 at a point lowered which permits the arms 11 to pass in an arcuate path beneath the bead 14, and when the peripheral edge of the cover is in proximity to the surface of the basket surrounding the opening 6, the catch 17 is forced inwardly and on passing beneath the bead is forced outwardly again by the spring 19 which maintains the catch in locked position and the cover detachably secured over the openin in the basket.
Having thus descr bed my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a stationary curb, of a rotatable basket therein provided with an opening, and having a flange extending around the Walls of said opening, a detachable cover for the basket, a housing carried by the under side of said cover, a latch within said housing, an actuating spring for the latch bearing at one end against the same and at the opposite end against the wall of said housing and entirely protected from the splashing contents of said basket during its rotation, said latch having a forwardly projecting part lying in a horizontal plane and engaging the under side of the flange of said basket and additional retaining means carried by the cover for cooperating with the flange.
2. A machine of the character described, the combination with a stationary curb, of a rotatable basket therein, a cover in said basket, a housing located on the under side of said housing and carried by a latching element within said housing, a spring located within the housing having one end bearing against the latch and the opposite end against thewall of said housing to be protected from the splashing contents of the basket, and an additional retaining means located remotely of said latch for engaging the basket to assist in retaining the cover thereon.
3. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a suitable curb, of a rotatable basket therein provided with an opening from which the wall of the basket flares outwardly and downwardly, said wall terminating marginally of said opening in an inwardly prO ecting flange, a detachable cover for the basket, and spaced means carried by said cover and adapted to engage under said flange, one of said means comprising a spring latch adapted to be urged outwardly in an approximately horizontal direction to detachably secure the flanged open portion of the basket between the surrounding outer edge of the cover and said spaced means.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of a subscribing witness.
ROBERT M. SMITH.
