Description

1. R.CL ANCY.
HOSP CLAMP.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. Ilf'9l6.
Patented July 2, 1918-.
I Snom/fob lll To c'ZZ whom it mapooac'crn:
'Be it known thati, Jenin Bi. lil-Lener, a
citizen or' the United residing at` Syracuse, in the county' ot @nondagxa and State oi' New York, have invented new and useful improvements in lflose- Ciamps, of which the following is a specification.
'lhis invention relates to hose clamps and consists in an improved construction and ar rangement of the parts thereoi' and is particularly applicable "to the type oi' clamp wherein outwardly bent ears are provided on the ends of the hand to receive suitable tightening and securing means. The `latter commonly consists oi a threadedA bolt received in suitable apertures in the earsand providedwith a nut threaded on the end thereof and desirably locked against rota-v tion.
in important feature oi' my present invention consists` of an improved arrangement oi" the securing means, preerably the bolt and nut aforesaid, wherein it is posi-` tioned to be substantially inalincment with the ban d or body ci the clamp. rlhis ll accomplish' yby suitably recessing the band of the clamp so as to receive the nut and the head of the bolt-thus permitting the bolt to assume a more inward position than heretofore. As a result of this construction the ears may he materally shortened 'or lowered 'and an ef.
' tective lock for the nut is provided hy the shortening of the ears and the elimination of special provision tor locking of the nut. Other features and advantages of my im proved' clamp `will beunderstoocl by reiterence to the accompanying drawing wherein the reference numerals ofn this ldescription are vapplied to corresponding parts in the several views.
ln the drawing, Figure l illustrates in side elevation a desirable embodiment of my invention. is a longitudinal vertical sectional View thereot'.- Fig. 3 is a plan view and Figs. t and 5 are end elevational views thereoi respectively from the left and right hand Side.,
Specialistica. of Letters Patent.
Hessel-tsaar.
r.lhe clamp embodying the features of Patented duly' 2, im@ aies aim-@a 1in-isis. salamanca/.isa l my invention is here shown consisting of an annular hand l having its ends outwardly bent to form 'the oppositely arranged ears 2 and. The clamp so formed is desirably stamped out' of sheet metal of uniform width 'with elongated slots t and 5 and bent into annular form as shown. ln'the forming ot the slot i anintegral tongue element' 6 isy formed and is bent inwardly to span the space between the ears for the protection of the hose in the usual manner.
The ears 2 and 3 are peroratedto receivev the threaded shank et the screw bolt 8 having threaded thereon the securing nut 9.- In 'accordance with my i invention 'I provide slots or openings l0 and 11 in the band ends at 'the base of each ear. As. shown these slots are yi'ormed'by enlargements or con'-A tinuations o the apertures for the boltl 8 thus permitting both slots v:had apertures to be. formed by stamping out oi a singlepiece of metal. The apertures'- for the' bolt 8l are l arranged to-position the bolt inwardly to- Ward theclampband so as ,to locas close thereto as possible thereby reducing the4 height of the cars to the 'minimuin When in position as shown, the slotted head lief the bolt is received in theopening l()l and the securing nut 9 similarly venters into` the opening il -vin the band, these openings 'thereby permitting of the boltassuming 'its inward position indicated.` As a resultof' the described arrangement it will loey seen that upon tightening of' the clamp by means of the bolt and nut, the tightening pressure will be applied to the ears atthe base there- 'of and substantially,A directly in a'linernentv with the band proper of the clamp. In consequence there is produced no upsetting l Strains on the ears which .has been an objectionable factor of clamps employing the larger ears asheretofore made.
A further valualle feature incidental to my improved construction consists in the" employment of the opening 11 for the nut 9 to perform the function of a nut lock whereby the nut is rigidly held from rotation. For this purpose the opening 11 is of a'size relative tothe nut to receive itin the position shown but to be inclosed by its side walls so as not to permit ofl the nut tui-nin Y therein. The necessity of providing specieJ nut locking means is thus eliminated.
The clamp thus formed is particularly simple and economical to manufacture. not
ion
si ees added strength by reason of elimina.N tiefe. oit the bendingstrain on the eers by epplying the Stresses in line with the bend ends and moreover has the advantage :recoinpzinying the lowering of the ears oi offering e smaller projection than heretofore.
While have shown and described en np- 'pioi'fed embodiment oi2 iny invention herein it @vill be understood that it is subject to vnrioue modifications 'Without from tbe scope of the invention. it is therefore intended that all metter contained hereinshall be interpreted :is ilhistintive end not in :i limiting sense. l
my invention l C leiin,"k A hose clamp comprising n fiat metal* :iriev'ing described bend bent into substantially circular `torni departing den? and having on its ends outwardly extending short eers and provided with Iapertures et the junction ot' the ears-With the body oi. the band, u tightening bolt fitted to the eportures and n nut threaded on the bolt, said apertures being arranged to position the bolt to exert the tightening Stress on the clamp in alinenient with the body und said apertures being extended into the body portion to perinitof the bolt being so positioned and t0 provide e locking means Jfor the nut,
and nn integral tongue bent inwardly from the body portion of the band und underlying the nut7 substantially as described.
ln testimony whereof I b-we Signed iny naine to this specification.
