Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed March 27, 1917. Serial No. 157,690.
To all whom it may concern:
citizen of the United States, residing at- Casar, in the county of Cleveland and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 'in Nut- Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for its object to provide an improved nut lock in which the nut is held against rotary movement upon the bolt by a looking element slidably and nonrotatably associated with the bolt.
Another object is the provision of a nut.- lock including a contractible locking element, which is contracted during advance of the nut to firmly grip the bolt and positively insure against any loose movement whatever between the nut and bolt.
With theseand other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. 6 represents a side elevation of the locking element removed from the bolt.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates an ordinary type of bolt having the usual external screw threads extending inwardly from one end and a head 6 at the opposite end. The bolt 5 is cut away longitudinally to present a longitudinal flat surface 7, adapted to cooperate with the corresponding flat surface formed internally of the locking element, designated generally by the numeral 9, to secure the latter against rotary movement The locking element 9 is in the form of a ring or sleeve, and is preferably formed of spring metal. The ring or sleeve is formed with a longitudinal slit 10, permitting it to be freely moved longitudinally of the bolt 7. One end of the locking element is tapered, as indicated at 11, and the relatively large cylindrical portion thereof is formed with closely arranged longitudinal grooves 12.
A nut 13, having a longitudinal bore 14c, is positioned upon the bolt 5 outwardly of the locking element 9, and the inner part of the nut is of cylind ical formation, while the outerpart thereof is-cut away to provide a series of wrench-engaging faces 15. One
terminal of the internal bore lt of the nut is screw threaded, as indicated at 16, tov c0- operate with the external screw threads of the bolt 5, and the central portion of the bore is increased in diameter or flared, as at 17, the inclination of the flared portion 17 approximately corresponding to the inclination of the tapered terminal 11 ofthe locking element. The end of the bore 1 1 oppo- "site the threaded portion 16 is plane and cylindrical, as indicated at 18, and is of such diameter as to receive the grooved portion 12 of the locking element. A locking screw 19 is fitted in the wall of the cylindrical portion 18 of the bore in the nut and is provided with a pointed terminal for engaging in one of the several grooves 12 to establish a non-rotatable connection between the locking element and nut.
In use, the locking element 9 is slipped upon the bolt 5 and moved longitudinally thereon against an object 21, the locking element being securely held against rotary movement with relation to the bolt by the flat internal face 8 thereof engaging the straight fiat face? of the bolt. The screw 19 is subsequently adjusted so that the inner pointed terminal thereof is moved outside of the plane of the plane cylindrical portion 18 of the internal bore of the nut, permitting the latter to be advanced toward the object 21 until the inclined surface 17 of the bore overlies and compresses the tapered terminal of the locking element 9, thereby contracting the latter and firmly clamping it upon the bolt. By contracting the locking element in the manner described, it i evident that it is firmlv clamped about the bolt preventing loose movement of the locking element with relation to the bolt. Subsequent to the proper adjustment of the nut, the screw 19 is advanced and theinner pointed terminal thereof enters one of the grooves 12 in the locking element, thereby establishing a non-rotatable connection between the nut and locking element and Bfl QCT tively preventing accidental removal or loosening of the nut from the bolt.
What I claim is:
1. A nut lock including a bolt, a contractible locking element slidably and-non-rotatably mounted upon the bolt, a nut capable of contracting the locking element upon the bolt, and adjustable means for securing the nut against rotary movement with relation to the locking element.
2. A nut lock including a bolt, a contractible locking element slid-ably and non-rotatably mounted upon the bolt, and a nut fitted upon the, bolt capable of contracting the locking element to firmly clamp the latter upon the bolt.
3. A nut lock including a bolt, a locking I element slidably and non-rotatably mounted ,upon the bolt having'a tapered terminal, and
a nut fitted upon the bolt having the inner terminal of the bore flared to receive and compress or contract the locking element upon the bolt.
4. A nut lock including a bolt, a contractible locking element slidably and non-rota- -adapted-to engage the locking element to secure the nut and lockingelement against rotary movement.-
5. A nut lock includinga bolt, a ring-like locking element slidably and non-rotatably mounted upon the bolt having a tapered outer terminal (and a longitudinally grooved body portion, a nut fitted upon the bolt having the inner terminal of the bore thereof flared and adapted to cooperate with the tapered terminal of the locking element to contract the latter about the bolt, and adjustable means carried by the nut for en gaging in the grooves of the locking element to secure the nut against rotary movement with relation thereto.
