IMPROVEMENT IN PICTURE-NAILS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,933, dated March 26, 1872.

To all whomit't may concern:

Be it known that I, SPENCER C. CARY, of Brooklyn, county of Kings, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ornamental Headed Picture- Na-ils or Screws; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawing forming a part of this application, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same.

The drawing shows the nature of my invention, and relates to that class of nails or screws with ornamental heads, used principally for hanging pictures, 826., and consists in using wood and metal in such a manner that the head or bar may be used as a lever to turn the screw into the wall.

Referring to the drawing, Figures 1 and 3 are my improved picture-nail or screw with a head or bar of wood. Fig.2 is a view of the screw, with the eye or ring of the same surrounding the wood part. Figs. 4 and 5 are sectional views of the bars, showing the metallic caps on the ends of the same.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe.

The screwA is formed of any suitable metal, and by any of the usual ways. The eye part P is formed by bending or casting in the usual manner. The wood part B is turned in the accustom ed way by lathe or hollow mandrel, of suitable sizes and lengths, and may be polished, oiled, or by anyof the known methods for finishing woods. The shapes and styles may be numerous, to suit the taste of the most fastidious. These wood bars are secured in the ring or eye of the screw by compressing the diameter of the same upon the wood at the center, indenting sufficiently to prevent slipwhere a long shank is required, I attach washers to the screw, as shown in Fig. 3 at H. I would remark that the metallic caps or other similar ornaments may be cast, or of sheet metal formed by the usual means.

The object of my invention is to provide an article to be used in suspending picture-frames and for other similar purposes, in a manner that the person desiring may, without the use of tools, secure the same in any desired position in a better and more satisfactorymanner than hasbeen heretofore known. The employment of wood for ease and chca-pness of manufacture, the various pleasing shades of the same when polished or otherwise finished, the metallic ring surrounding the same'when plated or otherwise 'finished, contrasts with the wood, and avery ornamental device is obtained.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is The knob 13 of wood, with or without the caps E, in combination with the. eye or ring P forming a part of the screw A, as and for the purposes described.
