IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS-PAD CLAMPS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,689, dated February 13, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J AMES H. GARRETT, of Greencastle, in the county of Putnam and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Harness-Pad Clamp, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had tothe annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawing is' a representation of a top view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of a harness-pad having my improvement.

,l This invention has relation to harness-pads and consists in the construction and novel arrangement of a metallic clamp for the purpose of keeping the pad-skirt in its proper place, as hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawing, A represents a metallic pad or harness-saddle plate, having attached to it the housing B, constructed with the welt-flanges C, resting on the bur-piece D, which is secured to the plate A by means of the rivets d. E designates the pad-skirt, Which rests on the housing, and which is secured in place by means of the ring-bolts e vand headed bolt e1, which pass through the several parts of the pad as shown, nuts e2 being used inholding said bolts in place. Parts of the housing and bur-piece are shown `projecting beyond the end of the pad-plate. To the inner side of the bur-piece I rivet a nutplate, g, the hole in which is made to coincide with a hole made through the skirt and housing. I then pass a bolt, g1, holding a clampingplate, g2, through these holes, screwing it into the nut-plate. The clamp-plate I construct with-a iange or lug at either end, to fit close to the edges of the skirting, so that When tightened down, it will hold said skirting and prevent it from being pulled or bent from side to side by the motions of the horse. The clamping-plate may be adj usted to suit different thicknesses of leather. It is adapted to all of the ordinary kinds of harness-pads, the bolt being passed through the several parts, as described.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The adjustable clamp for saddle-pads, consisting of the rigid or loose nut g, the screw g1, and the concave spring clamp-plate g2, pivoted on said screw, in combination with a perforated pad-skirt, E, substantially as specified.
