WASTE-CAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 14, 1917.
Application filed August 4, 1913. Serial No. 782,845.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALUGIE L. HANSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evanston, county of Lake, and State of Illinois, have invented a certain newand useful llmprovement in WVasteCans, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of devices in which the bail is adapted to be pedally operated with the result that the depression of the bail operates toelevate the lid covering the container.
My device is designed as an improvement on these containers with which I am familiar, which have present the objectionable feature that no means are provided to pre vent the ends of the bail from being bent outwardly, in which event they fail to operate satisfactorily.
My invention has for its object to avoid the foregoing objection and to furnish a construction which will be such that it is practically impossible for it to get out of order in use.
My means of accomplishing the foregoing may be more readily understood by having reference to the accompanying drawings, which are hereunto annexed and are a part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a top or plan view of a container fitted with my improvement.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, the different positions of the movable parts being indicated by dotted lines.
As shown in the drawings, 1 is the container, which is provided with a bail 2, which is pivotally mounted upon pivots 3, which are secured to the side walls of the container. The ends of the bail extend be yond the pivots for a purpose which will be hereinafter explained. The top of the container is divided into two parts a and 5, the part 5 being rigidly secured to the container, the part 4 being hinged to the part 5 by means of a hinge 6 of the usual or ordinary construction.
A piece of strap iron 7 is riveted to the hinged portion 4, and is provided with arms 8 and 9, which depend downwardly therefrom, and are provided with headed lugs 10 and 11. Two links 13, each of which has its lower end permanently secured to the pivots 3, are engaged rigidly by lugs 10 and 11' through the medium of slots 12 formed in their upper ends. These slots are fitted to the said lugs underneath the said head. A stop 14 is rigidly secured to the top of the stationary part of the head 5, and is adapted to prevent the movement of the hinged portion & beyond a predetermined point.
I provide a handle 15 to permit the user toraise the lid manually, if he so desires.
The container is preferably provided with legs 16 of the usual type. The extended ends 17 of the bail are bent laterally forming. extensions which are adapted to engage the edge of the links 13.
The Operation of the device is as follows:
In carrying the container from place to place, the bail assumes the position indicated by the dotted lines 18. When at rest it assumes the position shown in the full lines in Fig. 2. When the operator desires to deposit waste within the container, by pressing upon the bail 2 with his foot, it will be moved into the position shown in the dotted lines 19. This movement will operate, through the medium of the lateral extensions on the ends 17 of the bail, to throw the links 13 into the position shown in the dotted lines in Fig. 2, with the result that the hinged portion 4 of the lid will be caused to assume the position shown in the dotted lines 20.
In order to prevent any possible disengagement of the lugs 10 and 11 with the slots 12, formed in the links, I provide heads 21, which are formed integral with the said lugs and effectually prevent the said links from becoming disengaged therefrom.
Having described my invention, what I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a container, having a portion of its cover rigidly secured thereto the remaining portion being hinged to said fixed portion, of a stop to prevent the hinged portion being raised beyond a predetermined point, arms secured to the hinged portion depending downwardly on each side of the container, a headed lug secured to the lower end of each of said arms, pivots mounted in the side walls of said container, a bail pivotally attached to said pivots, the ends of which extend beyond said pivots, lateral extensions formed on said ends, links permanently mounted on each of said pivots, there being slots in their upper ends, each of said ends being slidable between the heads on the lugs and the arms on which said lugs are mounted for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with a container, having a portion of its cover rigidly secured to the container the remaining portion being hinged to said fixed portion, of a stop to prevent the hinged portion being raised beyond a predetermined point, arms rigidly secured to the hinged portion depending downwardly on each side of the container, a
headed lug secured to the lower end of each of said arms, pivots mounted in the side walls of said container, a bail pivotally attached thereto, the ends of which extend beyonr said pivots, a link permanently mounted on each of said pivots having a slot in its upper end which engages the lug secured to one of the arms intermediate the head thereof and the arm, the ends of said bail being bent laterally to engage the links, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a container having a portion of its cover rigidly secured thereto the remaining portion being hinged to said fixed portion, of a stop to prevent the hinged portion being raised beyond a predetermined point, arms secured to the hinged portion depending downwardly oneach side of the container, pivots mounted in the side walls of the said container, a bail pivotally attached thereto, the ends of which AUGIE L. HANSEN.
