To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, WILL B. HULL, a citizen of the United States of America, and residing at Buffalo," county of Erie, and have invented certain new and useful "improvements in Garbage- Receptacles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates generally to garbage to receptacles, and more particularly to covered garbage receptacles which may be opened by foot power;
The general object of my invention has been to provide a device which shall be simand one which shall be strong" and durable. Another object has been to provide a simple and inexpensive cover operating mechanism for the receptacle.
l have attained these objects by the device shown in the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate lilre parts throughout the several views, of
Figure l vice, taken on thecenter line thereof and shows, in dotted lines, the position of the parts of the device when the cover is open. is a side elevation, partly in section, showing a modified form of cover operating device. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view of a device similar to that shown in Fig. 2, operating rod.
In the drawings, 5 represents the outer container of my device which is preferably made of sheet steel and provided with a The container is provided with feet 7, which are secured to the bottom 6 in any suitable manner. 8 is the cover of my device which is pivotally connected to the outer container 5by means of the hinge 9.
'lhe hinge 9 comprises a member l0 secured to the cover 8, and a member 11 secured to the outer container '5'. The member '10 o" the hinge is provided. with an outwardly exmnding armlfito which the cover; raisattachedc c.
Disposed beneath the" bottom 6 is a foot lever 13, provided with apedal 1d at its extreme outer end and pivotally secured at its inner end to a lug 15. llhis lug l5 punched from the material which terms the bottom 6, or maybe made at a specification ct Letters l atent. a lication filed November as, i913.

ttlt h separate piece oi material and secured to the bottom or side of the container, as de' sired. l6 is-a'n operating lever also disposed beneath the bottom 6 and is pivotally united.
toot lever 13 by means of the pivot pin 17. The outer end of the operating lever is pivotally united with an operating rod 18 which connects the the arm. 12 on the cover. The inner end otthe operating lever is curved somewhat and loosely disposed between the bottom 6 and a lug 19 secured thereto, whereby it is so held in position that a slight oscillating motion of the lever, when operated, is possible.
20 is an inner container which fits inside the outer container 5 and is arranged to have a bead 21, formed at the upper edge thereof, rest upon outer container 5, hus preyenting" garbage or other refuse from getting into outer container. This inner container is provided with a suitable bail 22 by which it maybe removed from, or placed within, the outer container.
ln the modification shown in 2, the outer container-Q3 is bottomless and is not provided with feet. The bottom edgejoii the material formingtheouter container extends to the floor-line and provides a suitable support for the same. lin" this form of device, the loot lever 24 is passed through a slot 25 formed in the lower part lot the outer container and'has 'its inner end pivotally connected to a suitable lug 26 secured to the inside of the outer container the diametrically opposite side; heoperating lever 27 has its inner end pivotally united by a pin fto a lug secured to the inside of the outer site to the slot 525 The leversfitand 27 are l pivotally united near their centers by means of a pivot pin29. The operating lever 527 is provided with a slot 30 in its inner'end, in which the pivot pin may move, thus permitting a slight oscillating motion or the levers when operated, The outer end of the operatin lever 2? is connected with the arm '12 of the cover 8 by means oi operating rod 31.
lln Fig. 3, where l show a slightly anodieta form of operating; rod, is the outer container, which is the upper edge ot the ill-5 part with a foot lever 24, in a similar manner to the device just described, and an operating lever 33 Whichis pivoted to the side of the container and to the foot lever 24, the same as just described in connection with the form shown in Fig; 2. A slot 34 is formed in the upper part of the container 32, directly beneath the hinge 9. The operating rod 35, in this form of the device, is disposed within the outer container 32 and has its upper end bent at an angle and pro jecting through the slot 34.
Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim is: p
1. A garbage receptacle comprising, an outer container, a hinged cover for said container, a cover operating mechanism located near the base of said container comprising, a foot lever extending diametrically across the bottom ofsaid container and having one end pivotally secured to said con-'- tainer near the rear side thereof, while its other end extends beyond the front thereof, an operating lever extending diametrically across the bottom of said container and having one end loosely mounted on said container, means for pivotally uniting said operating lever and said foot lever near their centers, and an operating rod. pivotally .connecting the outer end of said operating lever and said cover, operated, have a shear like action.
2. A garbage receptacle comprising, an outer container, a cover, a hinge uniting said outer container and cover,'sa1-d hinge being provided with; an arm for limiting the back- Ward motion of said cover,
cover operating mechanism located near the base of said container comprising, a foot lever extending diametrically across the bottom of said coneratlng lever and whereby said levers, when.
emme tainer and having one end pivotally secured to said container near the rear side thereof, while its other end extends beyond the front thereof, an operating lever extending diametrically across the bottom of said container and, on said container, means for pivotally uniting said operating lever and said foot lever near their centers, and an operating rod pivotally connecting the outer end of said op asaid cover, whereby said levers, when operated, have a shear like action.
'3. A garbage receptacle comprising, an outer container, a hinged cover for said container,- a cover operating mechanism located near the base of said container comprising, a foot lever extending diametrically across the bottom of said container and having one end pivotally secured to said container near the rear side thereof, while its other end extends beyond the front thereof, a strap secured to the lower part of said container, an operating lever extending diametrically across the bottom of said container and having its lower end slidably supported by said strap, means for pivotally uniting said operating lever and said foot lever near their having one end loosely mounted centers, and an operating rod pivotally connecting the outer and said cover, operated, have a shear like action.
In'testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two sub scribing witnesses.
end of said operating lever WILL B. HULL.
