SANITARY MATTRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 9, 11917.
Application filed January 29, 1915. Serial No. 5,074.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN D. CoUR'rs, a citizen of the United States, and a resi-' dent of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Sanitary Mattress; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relatesto mattresses.
Tt particularly relates tothe formation of the mattress body.
By my invention the mattress is made up of a plurality. of pads which may be laid one above the other or may be folded as the mattress becomes worn or the material contained in the pads becomes compressed or shifted in its position. The pads may be folded so as to bring the centers which are compressed the most to the ends of the mattress. Also, by my invention the tufting of the different pads is so arranged that the tufts of one will be located over the tufting stitches or ties of the other which produces a smooth surface on top of the mattress. Also, by my invention the pads are located in an inclosing ticking or casing which may be readily opened for the removal of the pads for purposes of airing and adjusting and folding of the pads.
The invention may be contained in many forms of bedding, mattresses, cushions, etc., usable for different purposes, all of which come within the purview of my claims hereinafter appended. To show the practicability of my invention, ll have selected a mattress as an example of cushions containing the invention, and shall describe it hereinafter. The mattress selected is illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 of the drawings illustrates a perspective view of the mattress showing the cover or ticking open. Fig. 2 illustrates a sectional view of a part of the mattress. Fig. 3 illustrates a top view of a mattress showing the arrangement of the tufting of the pads.
Referring to the drawings, 1, Fig. 1, is an inclosing casing or ticking for containing the pads 2. The ticking is provided with a number of snap or glove buttons 3 arranged along its edge and located in a flap or flange 4: extending around the ticking and clownwardly from the top of the mattress, and in the upwardly extending flange 5 located in the lower half of the ticking 1. The eyes 3 and the studs 6 may be snapped together in the manner well known in the art so as to fasten the two halves of the ticking l together. In order to open the casing or ticking all that is necessary isto pull the two parts of the ticking apart, whereupon, the button parts will readily separate. The pads may then be removed for any desired purpose, such as, for renovating or airing or substitution of pads. The pads may be readily replaced by simply placing them on the bottom of the casing or tick and laying the top of the casing or tick over the pads and snapping the parts of the buttons together. The mattress being divisible into relatively thin pads, may be renovated in parts. The pads may also be folded so as to bring to the center, portions of the pads, which have not been compressed by use of the mattress, such as, the ends of the pads, may be brought to the central portion of the mattress. The pads may be folded in a great variety of ways in order to remove the compressed portions thereof to parts of the mattress which in the use thereof do notreceive the greater weight which .it supports in such use. When mattresses are so folded the top pad may be laid over the whole length of the mattress to correct any irregularities which otherwise would be felt through the top of the mattress. v
The pads 2 are tufted by means of the ties 10. The tufting ties are so located in adjoining pads that they will be out of vertical alinement, that is to say, one tufting tie of each mattress will be located centrally with respect to the tufting ties in the pads above and below the tie as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. By this means the irregularities which are caused by tufting is entirely obviated. The surface of the mattress will be smooth and even.
The mattress selected and described may be greatlyvaried in the arrangement and manufacture of its parts for mattresses, cushions and the like, and such modifications may be used for many varied purposes and still contain the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what desire to secure by Letthe tufting ties of each pad being I of the biscuit tufts of the adjoining pads, and an inclosing ticking having side flaps and buttons for closing the ticking along the side edges of the flaps to secure the pads in their relative positions as to the tufting ties.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name to this specification in the presence of tWo subscribin Witnesses.
