, lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apperta-ins to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to filters, and con sists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a water filter, suitable for residence use and adapted to be attached to an ordinary faucet so as not to materially decrease the working space below the same, and which will allow a discharge of water from the faucet through the base or supporting member of the filter without disturbing the accumulation of filtered water.
Another object is to provide a filter in which an improved construction will be employed to maintain the desired relation between the filtering element and its casing, and to allow ready access to the interior parts to clean the same.
To associate with a filter a novel valve permitting either filtered or unfiltered water The above objects are attained by the structure hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view of the filter in side elevation, showing it mounted upon a portion of faucet indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 22 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a cross section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, wherein like referencecharacters designate similar parts in all the figures, the numeral 1 designates the supporting member of the filter, which is formed with an inlet 2 and is adapted for screwthreaded engagement with a faucet 3. The member 1 has aplane portion at inclosed by an an nular flange 5, and with said flange there is engaged (preferably by screw threads) the lowerend'of the cylindrical filter casing 6. The top 7 of the casing is preferably permanently secured thereupon in any desired manner. Said top is formed at diametrically opposite points with laterally projecting wings 8, which facilitate screwing the casing into the member 1. Within the casing there is mounted a cylindrical filtering member 9, co-axial with the casing and forming with the same an outer annular chamber 10. The member 9 is formed with an axial tubular chamber 11, into the ends of which, respectively, projects an annular flange 12, depending centrally from the top 7, and a nipple 13 upstanding from the member 1. Between the top end of the filtering member and the casing top is interposed a packing washer 14, and a similar washer is interposed between the lower end of said member and the member 1. This ar rangement is such that when the casing has been screwed firmly into the flange 5, the packing washers are pressed tightly between the filtering element and the casing ends, producing water-tight joints. Thus the chambers 10 and 11 have communication only through the pores of the filtering memher. The lower edge of the filtering element is preferably beveled as seen in Fig. 2.
Below its portion 4, the member 1 is formed with a tapering valve casing 15, having its axis horizontal, and preferably transverse with the vertical plane in which lie the axes of the casing 6 and inlet 2. The
\ in a handle 18 perpendicular to the axis of the valve. The valve casing is formed with four ports, respectively designated by the numerals 19, 20, 21 and 22. The port 19 communicates with a chamber 23 into which the filter inlet 2 opens. The chamber 23 has a passage 2 1 which opens to the space between the filtering member and the casing, said passage being through the portion 4 of the member 1 and through the adjacent washer 14L The port 20 communicates with a chamber 25 into which the nipple 13 also opens. openings 28 are out of use, and'the're is no discharge from the outlet 26. Under these conditions the valve (not shown) of the faucet 3 will preferably be maintained open,
so that the chamber 23 and the space surrounding the filtering element may be filled with unfiltered water and the chambers 11 and 25 may fill with filtered water through the filtering member. Ifthe handle 18 is shifted to the position indicated in Fig. 1 at 29, it is apparent from Fig. 2 that the openings 28 will establish communication through the valve between the'chamber 25 and the extension 27 of thedischarge passage. The accumulation of filtered water in the chamber 11 will thus be drawn off, and if the valve be left in the position specified, the filtered water will be discharged'as fast as it percolates through the filtering element. When it is desired to obtain a discharge of unfiltered water, the handle 18 is shifted to the position indicated-at 30. From Fig. 2 it may be seen that the openings 28 will now establish communication through the valve member between the chamber 28 and thedischarge passage 26, and ifthe faucet valve is open unfiltered water will be discharged. It is to be observed that the accumulation offiltered water in the chamber 11 is not disturbed during the discharge of" unfiltered'water. Since the opening 2 will admit more water to the chamber 23 than may be drawn off through the port 19, the space surrounding the filtering element will continue full ofunfiltered'water, while such ofthe filtering element, the space surrounding the filteringelement has a comparatively large/area adjacent the bottom of the element so that unfiltered water rising through the passage 24 may circulate freely about the lower end of the element 11 and rise into the more restricted space on all sides of said element.
To limit'rotation of'the valve so that the openings 28 will occupy the desired positions when the valve comes to rest, a stop 31 is formed upon the larger end of the valve adjacent the casing, and shoulders 32 are formed upon the valve casing at diametrically opposite points of the same, against Which shoulders the stop will abut when the handle is shifted to its limiting positions.
It is to be noted that the construction of the filter and the manner of attaching the filter to the faucet is such as to leave the space beneath the faucet practically unobstructed. This is an important considera tion, especially when the filter is installed above a sink, as will commonly be the ease.
The invention is presented as including all suchmodifications and changes as properly come within the scope of the following claims.
Having thus fully set forth our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A filter, comprising a filtering member, formed with a central chamber, a. casing for said member, forming therewith an .outer chamber, a supporting member upon which said casing is detachably mounted, formed with a discharge passage and with a threaded inlet having a branch passage extended into open communication with the outer chamber of the filter, and a valve operatively mounted in the supporting member, actuable to place the inlet and discharge passage thereof-in communication in one position of adjustment, and the central chamber of the filter in communication with the discharge passage in another position.
2. A filter, comprising a cylindrical filtering member, formed with an axial tubular chamber, a cylindrical casing containing the filtering member provided with a closure at one extremity, an annular chamber being formed between the casing and said member, a supporting member with which the other end of the casing has threaded engagement, said member having a discharge passage and having a threaded inlet, opening in the direction in which the casing projects, provided with a passage communicating direct with said outer chamber, and a valve operatively mounted in the supporting member actuable in one direction to place the inlet and discharge passage in communication and to place the central chamber of the filter in communication with the discharge passage in another position.
