Description

B.J.GRANT. v
ATTACHMENT FOR CLA W HAMMERS.
APPLICATIONFILED OCT. 12. 1913.
Patented Oct; 10,1916.
WZ/ZZ I I Inventor Witnesses v i Acforneys V 1 'UmEDSTATEe mmm- BENSON .ionns GRANT, or onavn'rrn,' mam,
all whom it mayconcern:
w Be it known-that I, BENSON J. GnANna citizen of the United. States, residing at Gravette, in the county of Benton and State of'Arkans'as, have invented a new and useful Attachment for Claw-Hammers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains-gener- 'ally to claw hammers, and relates'more particularly toan attachment for such hammers;
"It is the object of the present invention to provide an attachment for claw hammers, which shall facilitate both the attachment of thehandle to 't hammerhead and the nail pulling qualities thehead.
I viewYwhi'c 'h will.
With the foregoing'and other objects in eapparent as the description' proceeds,fthe presentinvention resides in-the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood the spirit ofthe invention.
that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departingfrom The invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodimentin vthe accompanying drawing, Whereinz- I Figure 1 is afragmerital elevation a claw hammer embodying the present improvement, the section being taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is an end view of the hammer, looking toward the head;
end of the helve 1, and having the striking Fig. 3 is a section view .taken on the line .3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig; 4 is a perspective view of theimproved attachment. The claw hammer, as illustrated, is of common construction, and embodies a han-- dle'or helve 1, and head 2, the head having a central eye or opening 3 receivingthe outer face 4 and nail extracting claw 5 at its respective ends. The claw has a curved.- cam face extending from the eye.
The present attachmentembodies a shoe or block 6, which may be constructed of malleable metal, or which may be cast or drop'fo'rged; Tlheshoe 6 has its inner face .snugly against the back of the head 2-. over 7 curved to conform to'the' curvature of the back'o'f the hammer head'Qso as to -abut 'the eye "'or opening 3. The otheror outer' face-8 of the shoe is curved so as ,to'pro-f nirracnmnnr FOB; cLnw-Hmnnns.
vide a cam face,the heel iportion 9 of the shoe being relatively thick and'rounded ab-j; ruptly, while-thetoe 10 of: thesho'e is rela'-.,,-{ l:'. tiv ely thin or sharpened. The heel '9 of-=.the-
' shoe extends 'towardor is nearest -the*strikmg face 4 ofthe hammer ,head, whilejthe relatively wide and sharptoe' 10 extends toward, or .to, and slightly ov'e'rlapsthe butt I Specification ofietters Patent." Pajtentgd Oct, i i 'Application filed October 17.19.15. 'senalna'z ssma. v
end of'thej claw 5, the cam face 8, merging 'into the butt end of the claw 5. Particular attention is directed to the fact that one endof'the shoe is relatively. sharp and overlaps Q the-butt end of; the claw, and that the.shoe. s increased inv thickness tb -theiother fend, -to' present a cam face forming. an unbroken 1 extension of the camface of the claw.
The shoe 6 is provided with the inwardly or downwardly projecting wedge-or tongue 11 projecting from its inner face standing transversely of the shoe 6, although the'same may be positionedlongitudinally of the shoeifdesired. The wedge 11 is adaptand ap proximately centrally. thereof, the wedge 11 ed to be driven into the outer'end of the securely within the eye 3Qof the hammer head, the shoe 6- being. provided with the apertures 12 directly. in rear and advance I ,of the wedge 11, through which'the wood.
screws 13 may be passed to take into the end of the helve 1. The apertures 12 and'screws heads of the screws may lie flush with the cam face 8 of the shoe. The shoe Gis'ofa of the head 2, in order that the sides of the rounded, as seen in Fig. 3. v h
In applying the attachment toa claw helve 1 so as 'to'spread the helve. to bind it' I 13 are preferably counter sunk sothat-the width from end to end equal to tlief-widthhammer tliewedge 11 is driven into the outer end of the helve, so that theinner face 7 of the shoe abuts snugly against the hammer head 2, it being understood thatthe' present invention is applicable to various claw hammers now in use. The screws 13am then inserted through the apertures 12 and screwed into the end of the helve 1 to clamp the shoe 6 in position. The wedge 11 in engaging .within theend of the helve will spread the same in order that the helve may be bound within the eye 3 ofthe-hammerf' head, and the cam face of; theshoe 3 will coiiperate with the curved claw 5. of thehamm'er head for facilitating the ex-' traction of-nails and the'like. Thus, when the claw 5 is engaged in the head of a nail, the nail may be partially pulled, in the usual manner, and as the nail is being withdrawn, 2 the hammer will ride upon the'cam face-8 v of the shoe 6, so that the nail maybe con--' appearance as" well as'.. facilitating the atandthe nail extracting qualities ofthe hamveniently extracted or pulled. The screws 13 in engaging the helve, and the vshoe in overlapping the eye 3 or back of the hammer head 2, will assist in retaining the helve position with respect to the hammer head, asw1l1ibeapparent. The shoe 6 will thus provide a neatand simple attachment 'fora claw hammer, the same not encumbering' the hammer in any manner, but, on the other hand, providing a neat and sightly tachnient of the helveto the hamm er, head mer head.
-With the attachment applied tothe'head of a' claw hammer, the hammeriwill fill all I of the requirements-of the most eficient nail pullinghammers.
' stitutingipractically a continuation of the with the shoe and entering that portion of the helve within the eye, and screws extendabruptly rounded.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed asnew is i The combination with a claw hammer having the outer face of its claw curved in the direction of its length, and a helve extending into the eye in'the hammer head,
of a shoe extending throughout the width of the head and having its outer face concurve of the corresponding face of the claw, a single central transverse wedge integral ing through the shoe directly in advance to and rear of the wedge and engaging the helve, the thickness of the shoe gradually increasing from the claw end thereof to the opposed end, said. opposed end being In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
