JOSEPH D. GILLAN, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNORVOF `ONE-HALF T0 JOHN F. BRADY, 0F PROVIDENCE,`RIIODE ISLAND.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH D. GiLLAN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners, of which the followingis a speciiication.
My invention relates to fasteners for chains, iilaments, or other articles and devices.
The essential objects of my invention are to prevent accidental disengagement of the fastening parts, and the attainment of this purpose in a structure simple to operate and inexpensive to construct.
To the above ends essentially my invention consists in such parts and combina- Y tions of parts as fall within the scope of the 2O appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which are a part of this specification, and in which is lshown merely a preferred form of embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my fastener, Figs. 2 and 3, longitudinal sections of the same, partially in side elevation, in locked and unlocked positions respectively, Fig. 4, a simii lar view of fastener with one member removed, Fig. 5, a side elevation of the removed member, Figs. 6 and 7, sections of the fastener on line 6 6 of Fig. 2, and 7-7 of Fig. 3 respectively," and Fig. 8, a section The embodiment of my invention hereinshown comprises a barrel or shell A composed of a cylindrical wall a closed at one end; this closure is either integral with the wall a or, as shown, a frusto-conical shaped disk B engaged at its periphery by the beveled inner end face b of the swaged shell A. If preferred the member B may be soldered in postion rather than swaged; but the construction herein illustrated is much more advantageous. In the construction illustrated the end wall or disk B has an attaching member, projection, or eye b.
Integral with or fixed by solder to an intermediate portion of the inner face of the wall a are two transversely curved longitudinally disposed shoulders or plates C, positioned diametrically opposite each other with resultant spaces or channels (Z there- FAs'rENEn.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented; Sept. 26, 1916., Application filed March 9, 191-5. Serial No. 13,119.v H l Y A between. Each Yrnembfer C rris provided lts inner end ymidway its width with a longitudinal rslot e extending a portion of the length of the plate C and forming seg-4 Coperating with the described barrel member 1s a locking member G' comprising a head g, slidaby mounted in the shell a,
mental projections or ribs f.
and a shank h.. In the present instance the against plates C. rlhe lugs are also so locatedV with relation to the depth of the slots e that when the former are seated in the latterthe head g is flush with the open end of the barrel A.
The member G, in the construction illustrated has a projection, ring, or attaching member y' upon the head g.
A plunger' or block K is slidably mounted in the barrel, against one face of which presses one end of a spring L whose other end abuts against the wall B. rIhe spring is of such length that the block K is pressed against the end of the fingers f when the locking member is removed as shown in Fig. 4.
vThe operation of my device is as follows To engage the parts the member G is inserted intothe barrel, 'the lugs z passing through the openings d until the head g abuts against the shoulders or plates C, and the spring L is compressed by the pressure of shank it' against the block K. Y The relative positions of the parts at this stage being shown in Figs. 3 and 7. The member G is then manually given a quarter turn, and the member K through the action of the spring L forces the member G outwardly until the lugs i seat 'themselves in the slots c, as shown in Figs. 2 and 6, thus locking the member G against rotation. The spring pressed member K contacting with the end of 'the member it which preferably slightly projects beyond the fingers f prevents the accidental unseating of the lugs in a longitudinal direction. It will, therefore, be obini served that the engagement of the parts is certain, and the manipulation thereof facile.
Changes in details of construction Within the spirit of my invention my be made, for obvious modifications Will occur to a person skilled in the art.
`What l claim is 1. In a fastener, a barrel open at one end, longitudinally disposed plates fixed Within said barrel and having longitudinal slots extending a portion of their length, a locking .member slidable in said barrel and having engageable with the inner end of said locking member, said locking member having a head spaced from said lugs to be flush With the open end'of the barrel when the locking member is at its outermost limit, and a spring in the barrel forcing said plunger outward.
8. In a fastener, a barrel open at one end, lo'ngitiidinally disposed plates fixed Within said barrel and having longitudinal slots extending a portion of their length, a locking member slidable lin said barrel and having radial lugs, a plunger in said barrel en'gageable with the inner end of said locking member, said locking member having a head spaced from said lugs to be flush with the open end of the barrel when the locking member is at its outermost limit, and a spring in the barrel forcing said plunger outward, said locking member being rotatable in the barrel and having its inner end extended beyond the inner ends of said plates to engage said plunger When the locking member is at its outermost limit.
4l. In a fastener, the combination' With a barrel provided with an open end, of internal longitudinally disposed plates spaced from each other on the barrel forming longitudinal passages, said plates being provided with longitudinal slots in their ends opposite the open end ofthe barrel and diametrically opposite each other, an axially movable locking member comprising a head slidably mounted in the open end of the barrel, a shank extending into the barrel, and lugs upon the shank diametrically opposite each other adapted to enter the passages, and to register in the slots when the locking member is axially moved, and a member yieldingly mountedin the barrel engaging the shank, said locking member having a head movable in the barrel and spaced from said lugs to be flush with the outer end of the barrel When the locking member is forced to its outermost position.
5. ln a fastener, the combination with a barrel provided with an open end, of oppositely disposed internal shoulders upon an intermediate portion of the barrel provided with longitudinal slots forming seats, a rotatable locking member slidably mounted in the open end of the barrel, radial lugs upon the locking member adapted to enter the slots, a plunger slidably mounted in the barrel in contact With the end of the locking member, and a spring in the barrel pressing against the plunger, the locking member having its inner end extended beyond said shoulders and engaged with the said plunger `when the said member is forced to its outermost position by said spring.
ln testimony whereof l have laliixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH D. GILLAN.
