HAT-Box.
Application ined Mai-@ii 5, i915. serial No. 12,340.
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Liiwis J. LEDBT'TER,
a citizen of the United States; residing at McAllen, in the county of Hildago and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Boxes.; vand I do hereby declare'the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention', such aswill enable others skilled in theiirt lto which it appertains to make-and use the same. i I l This inven'tionrelates -to new Vand useful improvements inv hat boxes, and has for its principalobject to provide a hat box which is capable `of being used on shelves and upon which it ispossible to pile additional ob" permit the user to remove a jects and yet hat therefrom.
Another object of the invention is to proT vide a hat box havinga removable covei` as well -as a hinged front'wall in order that the same may be used on shelves and the like. l
A further object of the invention is to provide-ahnt box which is constructed so as to effectively protect a hat against being crushed.
lI'ith these and other objects in view', the i invention consists vinthe novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be full)` set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 isa perspective view of a hat box constructed in accordance with this invention showing the door open, and F ig. Q
is a transverse sectional view through the center thereof.
Referring to the drawings by characters.
of reference, the numeral 1 designates as an entiretjv the body of the box comprising the bottom 2. having formed atthe lateral edges thereof the" side walls 3. A rear wall l is formed at the rear edge' of the bottom 2 opposite the front wall 5 which is formed with the opening G through which ahat maybe removed or replaced when so desired. The opening 6` extends entirely to the bottom of the box, but at the top and sides is separated b v the solid portion of the wall as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. It willA thus be seen that the opening may be formed in the front wall of the box without weaken- .ing the saine as the side walls will be held against bending movement and reinforced throughout its entire height.
Specification of Letters Iateiit. f
Patentdmie 13,1916;
.Hingedly secured toi-the bottom f ,t-l'jbxw? by means of the suitable, strip of flexible material 7, such as cloth or the like, is the front door 8 which is as wide as the box and is high enough to vcoverI the opening 5 so that the contents of the box' will be protected. A. suitable cover 9 of paper or asimilar material"overlies the hinge 7 andpro'tects the saine as cle-arly illustrated in Fig. 2.
In order to hold the front wall in a closedposition shown in the-drawing, a suitable flexible ineiiiberv10, which is preferably a coid or. ,string is secured near'the upper edge of ysaid door b v iiieans-ofa strip of paperor similarmaterial 11 which is glue-d or otherwise secured to the door. A-siinilar strip of paper 12 overlies the flexible member 13 which coperates with the member 10 in holding the door against the wa'll. Y
vThe cover of the box, which is designated generally b v thenunieral 1l. comprises the body 15 having formed on its edges the downturned flanges 1G which partially overlie the front, rear, and side walls of the box vto form a ldust-proof joint which will effectively protect the contents of the box.
. It will be apparent. from the foregoing that in use the box may be placed on a shelf..
and articles piled on lthe top thereof and ,i
when so desired the flexible members 10 and 13 .may be untied and the front door 8 will swing downwardly on the hinge 7 into the horizontal position shown in Fig. 1 .'.thus
permitting the contents of the box to be removed. It` will be apparent that the conasithereare no projections on the bottom to l90. tents may b 'e easily. withdrawn from the box ticles therefrom. and it is also evident that the yarticles on the top of the .box need not -be removed in order to remove'the hat.
Ihile in the foregoing'there has been shown and described the preferred einbodi-A nient of this invention. it is to be understood that such changes may be made'in th'e combination and arrangement of parts as .will lfall within the spirit and scope vof the invention as claimed.
Vhat is claimed is: s
A hat box of the class described compris--A inga bottom. side, front and rear walls. said fron-t walls being provided with a rectangular opening. said opening extending c`n` tirely to the bottom of the box,a portion of the side and topv of the front wall being left to reinforce che same, a strip of flexible mnn cloSed position, and n cover closing the top telnl being secured to the outer face of the of Suid box, substantially ns set forth. bottom of said box` u door approximately as In testimony whereof l ux my signature Wdaas the box und as high and having one in presence of two witnesses.
