Specication of Letters Patent.l
Application fned'narcn 5, 1915. semi No'. 12,241.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, FRANK J. W. Winsen, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cool; and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Music-Benches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to music benches, and its object is to provide a novel organization and arrangement of parts providing a horizontal seat for manual playing purposes, a farwardly inclined seat for player-piano purposes and a music cabinet in which the part forming the seat when the device is used as a player-piano bench, forms the rear cover or closure of the music cabinet when the device is used as a bench for manual playing.
In the accompanying drawings which represent a practical embodiment of my invention Figure l is a perspective view with the player-piano seat in position for such use; Fig. 2 is a view in rear elevation when the parts are arranged as in Fig. l and showing the preferred interior arrangement of the music cabinet; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2 with the playerpiano seat shown in full lines in its position to close the music cabinet and in dotted lines in its other position; and Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3k
showing the pivotal arrangement of the player-piano seat.
In the drawings the reference letter A represents four upright corner legs of the piano bench connected together by the usual cross pieces a, B represents the front panel, C the end panels and I) the bottom forming an interior music cabinet which preferably is provided with horizontal shelves E for music or music rolls. The top of the cabinet is closed by the horizontal seat F forming the seat for manual playing purposes and fixed in position-in a plane below the top edges of the ends which are provided with the usual finishing rails c. The supplemental or piano player seat is provided by the swinging panel Cr which is hinged at its rear end corners to the rear upper ends of the frame by any suitable hinges which will permit it to assume the two positions shown in full and dotted lines in Fig. 3, such for Patented Feb. 22, 191,6. p
sponding holes in the upper ends of the rear legs, the plates composing the hinge preferably being counter sunk in the associated parts as shown in Fig. 4 to strengthen the connection. rIhe seat G is supported in inclined position when used for its seating purpose by any suitable means, such as the stops I secured to or forming a part of the frame at the front corners of the horizontal seat F and arranged sothat the front edge of the seat Gr will be lower than its rear edge to give the desired forward and downward inclination when the bench is used by the player to operate a mechanical piano-player. When the bench is used for manual playing purposes the seat G is turned on its hinges and swung to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3, the width of the seat G being sufficient to close the rear open end of the cabinet as shown inFig. 3 so that it forms a cover therefor and leaves the seat F at regular piano height for manual playing purposes.l When the bench is to be used with a player-piano the seat Cr is swung to the position shown yin full lines in Fig. l and in dotted lines in Fig. 3, where it provides'a forwardly inclined seat at regular height, which is usually above thev height of a seat used for manual playing. When the seat G is swung to this position its free edge rests upon the stops I andit leaves the music cabinet open for easy access to the co-ntents thereof.
I claim 1. A music bench comprising a frame composed of'four uprights,`front, end and bottom panels forming a music cabinet, a horizontal seat fixed to the frame below the upper edges of theends and forming a top for the cabinet, a supplemental seat pivoted at its rear edge to the-rear upper ends of the frame above the horizontal seatV and forming a rear closure for the cabinet when it is swung down in rear thereof, and stops for the front edge of the pivoted seat to hold said seat in inclined position when it is `swung into its seating position above the frame, a seat-member*horizontally supportposition When it is swung into place above ed on the fra-ine below the upper `portion said first seat-member. 10 thereof, 'a second seat-member pivotally oon-Y In testimony whereof I atiX my signature nected at one edge at the upper portion of in presence of two Witnesses.
