Be it known that l, HENRY CHENEY, or' Little- Falls, in the county ot' `ltlerkimer and State oi" New York, have in\f'ented anew and Improved Nail-I-lammer; a-nd lA do hereby decla-re that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will ena-ble others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the aceoinpanying drawing torming part of this specification, in whichi Figure l represents a longitudinal section of my improved nail-hammer. This invention has i'or its object to make the fastening ot a nail in the jaws oi" a hammer practicable, so that the nail may be applied to its place by means oi' the hammer. The invention consists in providing a receptacle in the back of the hammer for the head of the nail so that the head can thereby be properly held while the nail is being wedged between the jaws.
A in the drawin represents the hammer-head, on which a a are the jaws. At the root of the jaws is-betweenthe same, ibrmedin thelnnnmerheada depression or chamber, b, large enough to receive a nail-head of ordinary size. This chamber b has, particularly, a shoulder, c, at the lower side, whereby the nail-head and nail are sustained while the body ofthe nail is forced up to be wedged between the jaws. Nail-hammers for holding the nails for application have, before this, been provided with depressions between the jaws for receiving the nail-heads; but such depressions were made in torni of grooves, and open at their lower ends to admit the nail-heads. They did, therefore, not form supports for the nails, and it was consequently quite diiiicult to secure the nails between the jaws by mere pressure of the lingers without any support for leverage. In my hammer the nail is supported by being inserted between the jaw and then moved lengthwise to carry its head into the cavity b.
Having thus described my in.\\'ention, T claim as new and desireI to secure by Letters Patentr- A miilhammer, provided with the cavity b which forms the supporti11g-shoulder e, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
HENRY CHENEY. YVitnesses DAVID TA'rroN, A. L. KLOCK.
