PICTURE-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pgmtgnted Now. 23, T9115.
Application filed December 19, 1913. Serial No. 807,679.
tures, frames. cabinets, and the like, and has for its object the construction of a hanger that will. prevent the wire or cord of the suspended picture or frame from slipping or shifting in the hanger after the picture has been placed in the. desired position.
In my present invention this undesirable feature of displacing and dis-arranging the picture is eliminated and the picture or the like. held firmly in the desired position. This is accomplished by forming a tongue, preferably of material taken from the body portion of the hanger, and bending it outwardly away from said body so as to form a crotch between said body and tongue. Into this crotch thus formed the picture wire or cord is placed and will be firmly held against I slipping or shifting.
lVith these ends in view I have devised a picture hanger hereinafter described in detail, and the features of novelty pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is an edge view of the hanger in the position it will take when in use; Fig. 2 is a front view of the same; Fig. 3 is a par tial section of the lower portion of the hanger; Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank before it is shaped into a hanger.
Similar numerals indicate like parts throughout the several figures.
In the practical construction and application of my hanger, 1 is the body portion,
the upper portion of which is shaped in such manner as to form a downturned hook By means of this hooked portion 2 tom portion of the hook is cut away as shown at 55. This, of course, is for the purpose of allowing the wire or cord to make a shorter bend'around said hook and to allow the wire to be tightly gripped in the crotch 7. In order to prevent the wire or cord from slipping after it is placed in position on hook 3, I provide a tongue 6 which is preferably struck out of the body portion 1 of the hanger in the manner shown in the drawings. The free end of this tongue is bent back from the body portion 1 sufficiently far to allow the end of said tongue to rest on the top of the upturned hook portion 3, as particularly shown in Figs. 1 and 3. By bending the tongue forward in the manner above described, it will be noticed that a crotch 7 is formed between the base of the tongue and the body of the hanger. It is here that the essential feature of my invention is disclosed, that is, the gripping of the wire or cord 4 in the crotch 7 in such manner as to prevent the said wire or cord from slipping. When the wire or cord is drawn down tightly in the bight of the crotch, the edges of the tongue and the walls of the opening 9 formed by the removal of the tongue from the body of the hanger, will firmly retain the wire or cord in position. By placing the free end of the tongue on the top of the hook 3, the wire or cord will always be guidedinto the desired position in crotch 7.
It will be noticed that if the weight of the suspended article is unusual the tongue will yield so that the hook portion 3 will always carry the weight of said suspended article.
Of course, it is obvious that constructive changes in the formation and details can be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. A hanger of the character described, comprising a body portion provided with an upturned hook portion and a tongue projecting forward from the body portion in a manner to form a crotch between the body portion and the tongue, the free end of said tongue resting on the top of the upturned hook portion.
2. A hanger of the character described mamas comprising a body portion having an upturned hook portion, narrowest at the bottom of said hook, and a tongue formed integral with the body portion w 1th the free end of said tongue extending forward to am above the upturned hook portion, said tongue being bent in such manner that a crotch formed. between 5m body and the tongue above the boitom oi he UPPILQIXL-QI? hook position.
