Replication led July 18, 3.914. Serial No. 851,689.
olf the llllnited States, residing at Galiland, .in the count-y oit Alameda and State of California., have invented cert-ain new and useful lmproveinents in Looks for lvlilli- Cnn Lids, off 'which the following` is a, specification.
Thi invention relates to improvements in locks and more particularly to an improved device of this character particularly adepted for milk cans.
The principal object oli my invention is to provide locks 'for nulli cans Whiel'i will pre Vent the unauthorized opening of cans and the'll'. ol their contents.
Another object to 'prevent the cap from loeing` accidentall)v pulled off While in transit thereby f xllowing` the contents to hecorne spilled or dust and dirt to enter into tlie can.
lllith these and other objects in `View niy invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement. ol? parte as lieiein'illustrated and as more specilieally pointed out in the appended claims. 'n
`leierence lieing had to the accompanying drawing; forming a Dart of this speci icati on wherein, Figure l'is a, View rvpartly in plan and partly in section of the upper part my improved can. Fig. 2 a iiiev in side elevation of the upper part ofthe can showing niy imiinoved loclr. applied thereto. l? 3 is a View in section tl'irougli the up 'per partof the can showing the closure therefor 'in elevation and the locl easing and upper part the Vin section. 4 z fragmentary vieniv looking toward the inn er n all of: the top 03E the can.
' Referring' to eorresiiiond'ng parts by the saine ninnei'als reference, 'l denotes the upper part. ol" the nan body having the roduced neel; il with tno headed edge The cf eure 'for the can is denoted hy. 4 and conside oi? the portion 5i adapted to fit within the noch 2.
An annular flange 4f." is formed around the upper portion of 5, which contacts with the head 2l and so prevents the closure from heilig pnshed too r into the can neel:
prevents dust from gathering in the crack between the lid end neck.
6 denotes a raised lug igor-:ned on the side i? 5 which is adapted. to a. bayonet slot 'i' foi-ined in the side of noch '2, this bayonet jointI being spaced diametri ally opposite the locking means. The latter consists of a ease 8 with a key hole 9, the case being attached to the side of the neel; portion l hy means of the lateral extending [langes 10. 'Within this case is mounted a. spring 11 on the upoer end of which iliornied a lug` l2 having the upper surface rounded or inclined as shown. To the portion of the clolsure l which extends above the flange l is attached a similar case 13 attached in the same manner in the side of this portion di the lid, and slidahly mounted longitudinally `therein is holt 14 having an enlarged head 15, this holt being square or otherwise prevented 'from rotating. Adjacent the lower end of this holt is formed a notch 16, Which is adapted to engage with the lug 1Q and the bottoni of the bolt is also rounded so as i to contact with the rounded portion oi the lug and torce the saine to one side. Sur-- rounding holt ll Within the cese 13 is a spring 17, which alouts against the .lower end of this case and a pin 1S through the bolt. 14.
The nianner of using this lock is as follows: The closure is first placed on the eau and turned so as to lock the bayonet joint, which movement brings the lock, cases 8 and 13 into alincnient. The bolt 1d is then depressed and the same is pushed downwardly the curved lower end contacts with the cui-red upper surface of lug` 12 and forces the spring toward the outer Wall of case 8 and allows the lower end of the holt to pass the lug,` and the latter to enter notch 16. ln this position it will he evident that the can can not he opened hy any ordinary nieansand a key 9 such as shown in is required to ail/ect the opening. This Tiey is entered through hole 9 in the outer casing and. n siinilai leaped hole in the spring 11 when hy giving it a. quarter turn lie spring may he pulled toward the Wall a suilieient amount to .allow the holtv to he pressed upwardly by means of spring 17. The bolt is raised a suflicient distance to bring the lowermost point in alinenient with the bottom of the case 13 thus allowing the closure to he turned and the bayonet joint unlocked.
Thus it will ne seen that l have provided e einiole effen-ive lock te prevent e can to be :aeeiden'n'y and expose to eonimninnion :md eso Wheh wil p'even the unauthorized remove ef 'lle comente,
A loe-lfV im. mlz een lids comprising a hollow fase mounized on Het spring longitudinally dispose in said ense und haw' one end attached to the wal theifeo, e lug on. the opposite end of said. spring, :m openg 'through said case and Suid spring whereby the .latter muy be e11- by' u "5v-headed key and means cm2 fied 'the @op of sai can fol' engaging said sp1-ing" 2. A look for mk can lids comprising a hollow euse mounted on the neck thereof, a, Het spring longitudinally disposed. in said the neck thereof, z1,
ease and having one attached to the Wall thereof, e lug on the oppesive end of said Spring, an opening through said case and said spring whereby #he latter' may be engege by a v3""-heade key, a hollow casing carried by the cap of eid omi, a foar sldeble therein and adapted to extend into the case in the side of the een meek., :L notch in #ghe side of seid bar zxdapefl to be engaged by the ing on said Het spjging and spring means for raising said bar when said lug is reeased.
In testimony whereof ao: my signature in presence of two witnesses.
