Letters Patent No. 113,369, dated April 4, 1871-.
i IMPROVEMENT; IN PORTABLE DUMPlNG-HODS FOR EARTH-CLOSETS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern, 4
Be it known that I, ELrAsfW. C. VANDERVEER, of Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Dumping-Beds for Earth-Closets; and I do hereby declare that theI following isa full, Iclear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this speciication.
This invention consists ina novel constrnctionof a hod and manner of arranging the same within the closet, whereby its contents may be dumped into a pit or cesspool whileit is within the closet; or it may be removed therefrom and emptied.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure l is a central vertical section of an earthcloset having my hod applied;
Figure 2 is a similar view, 'showing the hod as being emptied while within the closet; and
Figure 3 is a section taken at right angles to the above, as indicated by the dotted'lines x a: in iig. l.
Similar letters of vreference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A is the hod, which is preferably made of galvanized iron, and is of angular form, having an inclined front, as represented in the drawing.
The central portion of' the upper part of the front of the hod is cutaway and a portion of the edges bent perpendicular-ly thereto to form lugs, to which the urine-guard B is hinged, at c e. This guard consists of 'a plate of the same material as that of which the hod is made, .having its lower portion weighted to keep it against and .parallel with the front of the hod A, and its side edges bent np'to form sides, which taper away at the top.
On the lower portion of each side of theshodthere is a 4wooden beam, C, which extends beyond the front of the hod. i These beams are secured thereto by two metal straps, a. a., that are rigidly secured to the hod by riveting or other means, one `at the front and the other at the back thereof, said straps being secured to the beams C C by screws.
These beams form supports, which slide on a frame within the earth-closet E, so that the hod is never in contact with the bottom thereof.
To these beams C C, at b b, opposite 4the lower edge of the front of the hod A, is pivoted a metal trap, "Il, which forms the bottom of the hod, and is provided `on its forward portion with a level', L, the upper face of which is notched to act in conj unctionwith and hold a stop, e, on a cranked yoke, Y, which is pivoted atp lv to the forward part of the beams O C, to hold the trap against thehod, as shown in iig. 1.
To empty the hod while within the closet, it is slid back over a hole, h, in the bottom thereof, and a sliding false bottom, F, which covers the said hole h, is slid forward; the cranked yoke Y is then turned, as shown in g. 2, so as to release the lever L, when the contents of the hod will throw the trap T open and drop into the pit, cesspool, or other receptacle with which the hole h communicates.
When the hod has to be removed from the closet before being emptied, the front or upper partici' the urine-guard B is turned down to permit the passage of the hod from the closet, and the bod is carried to a suitable place, and the lever released and its contents placed the 4urine-guard drops into position, and, by catching behind the portion 'i of the closet under the seat, forms a stop, as shown in iig. l, to prevent the hod from being moved too far forward.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination ofthe hod A, the slides O C,.trap I, lever L, and cranked yoke Y, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
E. W. C. VANDERVEER.
