' Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 9, 1915..
Application mea may 25, 1914. serial No. 840,783.
T0 a'ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that AI, AVARD AUGUSTUS ELLIS, citizenof the United States, residing at the city and in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Applicators; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in thel artlto which it appertains to make;l and use the same.
My invention relates primarily to medical applicators but more especially to those which are intended to be inserted into the vagina or rectum for the treatment of dis: eases therein.
One obj ect of my invention is to provide a device of this character by means of which a medicament can be easily inserted into the vagina or rectum by the person using the same and deposited in any desired locality therein.
Another object of my invention is to provide an inexpensive applicator which'is simple of construction and sanitary.
Another object of my invention is to provide an applicator which will be of assistance to the physician in the treatment of inflammatory conditions of the uterus and adnexa, pelvic cellulitis, etc., by saturated tamponage, thus providing an instrument that the physician may saiely place in the hands of the patient, by means of which the patient can apply the treatment at home.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out and claimed.
. In the accompanying drawings in which corresponding partsk are indicated by similar reference numerals, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my improved applicator, illustrating the inner and outer tubes positioned for use; Fig. 2 is a similar view, the inner.
tube being only: partially insection and illustrating the latter partially inserted within the outer tube; Fig. 3* is Ya longitudinal section, the inner tube having been completely inserted within the'outer one; Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on the line 4 4 of Fio'.' 2. y
Ieferring-more particularly to the drawings, my improvedd applicator comprises a straight cylindrical tube 1, of uniform bore preferably constructed of glass, whereby itv can be conveniently inserted in, and Withdrawn from the vagina without adhering. to the Walls of the latter. But of course it will be understood that I do not limit myself to this particular form or material. The front end edges of the tube 1 are rounded as at 2,-
so as to avoid any possibility of injury from- -sharp edges. The opposite or rear end is outwardly flared as at 3, thus forming a stop for` the inner tube to be hereinafter mentioned as well as providing means for insuring a firm grasp while inserting the applicator, and providing an easy means of introducing the tampon into the outer tube.
Slidably mounted Within the outer tube 1 isan inner tube 4, which may b e constructed of the same material as tube 1, and isv substantially equal in length thereto. The inner The medicated tampon 8 used in connec-V tion with my improved applicator, is sup- -plled with a cord 9, one end of which is securely fastened to said tampon, while the I-free end is threaded through the opening 6 in the tube 4, passed through the latter and allowed to depend from the rear end thereof as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This arrangement permits one end of the cord 9 to remain on the exterior of the vagina or rectum after insertion of the tampon, whereby the latter can be easily removed.
` In the operation andutilization of my improved applicator, a tampon, saturated with a suitable medicament, is placed in the flared end of tube 1, and the free end of cord 9 attached to said tampon is threaded through the opening 6- in the inner tube 4 and passed through the latter so as to depend from the rear end thereof, the inner tube 4 is then thrust through the tube 1 until the 'tampon is just ready for ejection from tube 1.- The applicator in this position is new ready to' be inserted into the vagina or rectum as the case mightvbe. After inserting the applicator into the vagina or rectum tube 4 is thruston through tube 1 until the tampon '8 is ejected from its front end into the vagina or rectum as the case might be. Inner and outer tubes 1 and 4 are now withdrawn from the vagina or rectum, leaving the cord which passed through and depended from tube 4 on the exterior of the vagina, so that whem ever desirable the tampon can be easily removed.
The word tamponfas used in the following claims, is intended to indicate any absorbent substance which may. be projected through l tube 1, as above described.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a unique applicator, preferably of glass, because the glass construction permits the two tubes to be easily sterilized, and one that, owing to the extreme simplicity can be placed on the market at a compar- I atively nominal cost.
Having thus described my invention, what' I claim as new is:
1. T he combination with a tube for the insertion into the vagina or rectum and a tampon, with a cord attached thereto, to be placed Within the tube, of a hollow plunger, through which said cord may be threaded, for ejecting the tampon fromV the end of said ing its front end edges rounded to present a 1,35 smooth surface, the rear end being outwardly iared to form a grasping means for said tube, an inner tube of substantially the same length as the outer tube slidably mounted within the latter, said inner tube having its front end closed and provided with a centrally disposed aperture, the opposite, rear, end being outwardly lared,a tampon adapted to be forced through and ejected from the inner end of said outer tube by the slidably disposed inner tube, and a` cord having one end connected with said tampon, the other end being passed through the centrally arranged aperture in the closed end of said inner tube, whereby when said tampon has been ejected by the former into the vagina or rectum, the cord will remain on the exterior, permitting said tampon to be easilyr removed.
In testimony'whereofl I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AVARD AUGUSTUS ELLIS.,- Witnesses I. VJ. DOHE, WM. T. CHILD.
