E. H. BIXLER.
INDICATOR.
APPLIUATIOH FILED SEPT. 29. 1913.

EVA HEETER BIXLER, OF NORTH MANCHESTER, INDIANA.
INDICATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 19, 14 5 15.
Application filed September 29, 1913. Serial No. 792,441.
To'aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, Eva H. BIXLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Manchester, in the county of Wabash and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Indicators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in protectors or indicators and more particularly to an indicator adapted for application to bottles and similar receptacles containing poison, the object of the invention being to provide an indicator, which when applied to the neck of a bottle will inclose the cork and at the same time warn the person removing the cork that the bottle contains poison.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an indicator of the above character which is preferably in the form of a metal cap constructed of a single sheet of metal bent to inclose the cork and whichcan be quickly and readily applied to the neck of the bottle or removed therefrom and when applied is resiliently held into engagement with the bottle neck.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which will possess advantages in points of eiiiciency and durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at thesame time is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination of and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claim and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation illustrating my improved indicator applied to the neck of a bottle; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the blank from which the indicator is formed, the same being shownin dotted lines, as in a folded position. V
In carrying out my invention, I provide a blank of sheet metal and in the construction of my improved indicator I form a body plate 1 and extending outwardly in opposite directions and radially arranged are the arms or tabs 2, the ends of each of the alined tabs being curved or coiled upon themselves to form sleeves. In the blank, as shown in Fig. 2, the ends of two of the tabs are merely bent inwardly upon themselves to form the sleeves 3 while the tabs which are disposed at right angles to these first mentioned tabs are provided at their outer ends with the angular bent portions 4, thence coiled upon themselves, as shown at 5, to form a sleeve which is adapted to receive a coil spring 6 and is further adapted to be resiliently engaged beneath the head of the bottle 7 so as to removably retain the indicator in position.
As indicated in Fig. 1, it will be readily apparent that my improved protector or indicator is applied to the neck of the bottle, the ends of two of the alined ends of the tabs 2 are merely coiled upon themselves and engaged beneath the head 7 of the bottle neck, the central portion 1 of the body fitting tightly against the outer end of the cork so as to retain the same in position. The indicators are further held in position by means of the alined tabs 2, the-outer ends of which are provided with the angular bent portions 4, thence bent upon themselves to form the adapted to engage beneath the head 7 of the bottle neck so as to resiliently retain the indicator in position.
The coil spring 6 is provided and is adapted to be arranged within the sleeves 5 and 5 so as to resiliently retain the same in engagement with the head 7 of the body.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be readily apparent that I have provided a simple and durable indicator which can be quickly and readily applied to the neck of a bottle and adapted to inclose a cork so as to warn the person removing the cork that the contents of the bottle is poison. It will also be apparent that by having the protector or indicator constructed of a single piece of sheet metal, it may be manufactured and placed on the market at a very small cost.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing 7 any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the appended claim.
lVhat I claim is The combination with a bottle neck and its head portion, of a cap including a recsleeve 5 which is tangular body portion, arms formed integral to form sleeves arranged at right angles to with the side portions of said cap and arthe first mentioned sleeves, and a coil spring ranged in opposedrelation, said arms being arranged Within said sleeves to resiliently l5 tapered toward their outer ends and adaptretain the same beneath the head portion of 5 ed to be disposed at right angles to the the bottle neck. 7 7
