To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT Voror, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, city and State of New York have invented new and useful Improvements in Locking Devices for Sliding Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sliding doors, such as doors for show and wall cases slidable relative to each ticularly to means to lock such doors against movement, and it is the object of the invention to provide a device for this purpose which is cheap and simple in construction and eliicient in operation.
In carrying out the invention 1 provide a latch pivoted on an axis parallel with the movement of the door and normally occupying a position out of the path of the door but when swung on its pivot is adapted to engage in the path of or with the door, means including a removable key operable padlock cooperating with said latch to lock it in looking position. In another form of the invention the latch or bolt is provided with a laterally projecting pin to engage in a helical groove in a rotatable pin, whereby to throw and maintain the latch or bolt into and out of the path of the door.
In the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a sectional plan view of a pair of doors slid able relative to each. other illustrating anembodiment of my invention in locking position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation looking at the right of Fig. 1, only a portion of the doors being shown. Fig. 3 is an elevation of my improved locking device showing the same in unlocking position. Figs. 1 to S, inclusive, are perspective views of the component parts of the device shown in Figs. 1 to 3. Fig. 9 is a sectional top view of a pair of overlapping doors illustrating an embodiment of my invention applied thereto. Fig. 10 is a perspective view of a plate utilized when the device is adapted to overlapping doors. In the embodiment of my invention illus tratcd in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings I have shown the same applied to a pair of. sliding doors a, b, for show or wall cases (designated in a general way by C) and slidable relative to each other, said doors shown as consisting of a glass supporting frame. 1
My locking device consists of a casing comprising a. pair of interlocking sections 0, (Z maintained in assembled position by screws 6, said casing being mortised-into a door, as Z), and retained therein by screws f, f having screw threaded connection with ears 9, 7 projecting from the casing section 0, the casing section (Z having a flange h extending parallel with the ears 9 to embrace the outside of the door frame.

It will thus be noted that as the latch 2' is manipulated by its finger-piece the hook portion will engage in front of the door a, preventing the sliding movement of the doors relative to each other, the other ends of the doors abutting against the framework of the show or wall case, and the hook portion of the latch engaging over the plate projection 7c will draw the doors together. It will be noted that due to the pivotal. supporting of the latch and plate the openings therein will travel through ditlerent arcs of movement relative to each other as indicated by the dotted lines 1 and 2 in Fig. 3, crossing each other when. the main latch is in looking position, as indicated by the dotted circle 3, 3, and that when the lock shackle engages in the latch and plate openings any downward pressure on the fingerpiece of the main latch will cause the latch and plate to pull in opposite directions on the lock shackle with all strains in direct line with the pivot point of the latch and plate preventing any unlatching movement of the main latch.

In Figs, 11 and 12 I have shown an embodiment of my invention in connection with glass doors, that is, doors consisting of glass without a frame, which are sup ported upon rollers 79, p engaging in run ways in the base of the show case. In this construction as the doors are not provided with a wooden frame the lock casing consists of a pair of connected and spaced apart recessed sections 7, q to be mortised into the side wall of the door runway, such runway wall engaging in the casing recesses 1 The latch and plate 2', Z are pivotally supported on pins 8, s respectively, and are substantially similar in construction and operation as the latch and plate illustrated in Figs. l. and 5, except that the main latch is not provided with the hook shaped portion, since it is not adapted toengage with but in front of the door. The casing sections are secured in place by an angular member engaging over projections screws passing K through openings in said member and projections and engaging in the bottom of the runway. The angular member has a portion I to project between the members a, q to serve as a stop for the main latch. The latch 2' is locked in looking position by the shackle of removable key operable padlock engaging in the latch and plate openings i and Z the same as in Figs. 1 and 2.
It will be noted that the described locking device when used in connection with glass or frameless doors will serve only to lock one of the doors, and I therefore provide a second locking device for the inner door, comprising a casing o (F l t and 20) mortised into the base of the show or wall case and secured therein by screws to passing through openings in lateral. projecting portions 015 the top casing plate to. Variations may be resorted to within the scope of my invention and portions thereof: may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, .l claim:
1. The combination with a pair of doors mounted to slide relative to each. other, of a latch pivotally carried by one of the doors to swing on an axis parallel with the movement of the door, said latch. consisting of a substantially rectangular plate of a width to come and occupy a position within the thickness of the door when in inoperative position, and of such length so that in operative position one end of the latch will project into the path of the other door, and the other end having an opening for the engagcment of the hasp of a pad-lock to maintain the latch in operative position.
2. The combination with a pair of doors mounted to slide relative to each other, of a projection fixed to one end of the doors; a
latch pivotally carried by the other door to swing on an axis parallel with the movement of the door, said latch consisting of a plate of a width to come and occupy a position within the thickness of the door and of such length so that the ends project be yond the lines of the door, one end of the latch adapted to project into the path of the other door to prevent endwise movement of the doors and formed with a hook to cooperate with the projection on the other door to draw the doors together, and the other end having an opening for the engagement of the hasp of a pad-lock, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

The combination with a sliding door, of means to lock said door against movement, comprising a latch pivoted to swing on an axis parallel with the movement of the door and normally out of the path of the door, one end of said latch when swung upon its pivot adapted to project into the path of the door and the other end having an opening; an auxiliary plate pivoted on an axis parallel with and actuated by the latch, said auxiliary plate also having an opening; and a lock to engage in the latch and plate openings to lock the latch in position with its end projecting into the path of the door. 1
5. The combination with a pair of doors slidable relative to each other, of means to lock said doors against movement, comprising a latch pivotally carried on the end of one of the doors to swing on an axis parallel with the movement of the doors, one end of said latch adapted to engage with the other door when swung on its pivot and the other end having an opening, and said latch normally maintained in position within the thickness of the door and out of engagement with the other door; a plate juxtaposed to the latch pivot on an axis parallel with the axis of the latch and actuated thereby and having an opening; and a lock operable by a removable key to engage in the latch and plate openings to lock the latch in position with its end in engagement with the one door.
6. A device for locking sliding doors, comprising a pivoted locking latch one end of which latch is adapted to project into the path of the door and the other end having an opening, and said latch having a cam slot; an auxiliary plate pivoted in juxtapo sition to the locking latch and one end pro vided with an opening, said auxiliary plate having a pin to engage in the slot of the locking latch to be actuated thereby; said openings in the latches and plate registering when the locking latch is in looking position; and a lock to engage in said openings, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
7. The combination with a pair of doors slidable relative to each other, of means to lock said doors against movement, comprising a casing carried by one of the doors; a pivoted latch carried by said casing to normally maintain a position within the casing, one end of said latch being hook shaped and adapted to engage with and in the path of the other door, and the other end having an opening and a finger-piece to manipulate the same, said latch also having a cam slot; an auxiliary plate pivotally supported within the casing in juxtaposition to the latch having a pin to engage in the cam slot and actuated by the latch, and one end of said plate having an opening to register with the opening in the latch when the latter is in locking position; and a lock to engage in the openings in said latch and plate to lock the latch in looking position.
