Description

dtitt gieten me eww.
Letters Patent No, 111,240, dated January 24,1871.
. IMPROVEMENT IN SPAD ES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part oi the same.
To allo/'hom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRISON PARKMAN, of Philadelphia, inthe county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Spade; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this 'specication, in which- Figure lis a front elevation Figure 2 is a longitudinal central section; and Figure 3, a transverse section. g This invention consists in a spadewhose lower end is beveled downward from each outer corner toa central point, which is wider at the lower than atthe upper end, which in cross-section is concave on its front and convex on its rear side, and which longitudinally is straight on its rearside from 'top to bottom.
Referring to the drawinga is a spade.
b, the centralv point at thc lowerend of the spade, said point rendering the spade more penetrative than as though it had a straight edge.'
c are the two lower 'corners of thel spade, these being fnrtherapart than are the two upper corners, and this for thepnrpose'of making a cut'so wide that the edges. of the spade shall not be in contact with 'the earth,I and that the spade may be easily .worked from side toside.
The concavity oil the spade adapts it to the taking up of earth, and by reason of its Straight rear side itv is more easily forced through earth than `as though it were curved. v
Having thus described my invention, v What I claim asl new, and desire. to secure by-Letters Patent, is-
As anew article of manufacture, a spade having an .angular point or cutting-edge narrowed gradually from its lower to its upper corners, concave or curved in cross-section, and straight longitudinally onV its rear side, Substantially as shown and described.
