Description
A. A. ARNOLD.
BOX covna APPLICATION FILED JUNBQ, 1913.
Patented Jan 27, 191i 45 tion of the rectan ALBERT A. ARNOLD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BOX-COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 9, 1913. Serial No. 772,524.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT A. ARNOLD, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the construction of boxes made from card-board or other suitable similar material, and especially to that type of such boxes designed to be manufactured, sold and shipped and stored in the flat or knock-down arran ement, and adapted to be folded or broug t into usable form by the purchasers.
The especial object of m present invention is to rovide a box or box cover of the style mentioned that will be cheap to manufacture in that there are no hand operations required, and but little waste of material, and that when folded or set up, will effectively maintain its completed form under all ordinary conditions to which it may be subjected.
A further object is to provide a box or box-cover in which rests or supports will be provided to receive the complementary receptacle or member in such manner as to facilitate the display of the contents of the 80 box.
Other objects of general utilit are conserved by my invention as will e readil apparent to those skilled in the art to whic it appertains.
I have shown my invention as applied to a box-cover, but the same construction may be used in making the boxes, if desired.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a boxcover in its partially assembled or folded condition; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the blank from which the cover shown in Fig.1 is made.
Referring to the details of Fig. 2, the reference character 3 re resents the central porar blank of card-board or other suitable material, the outlines of same being defined or bounded by the dotted lines 3', 3 which indicate the lines along which the blank is scored or creased to so facilitate the subsequent folding operations. 4, 4, represent the sections ad'aceht the long sides of section 8 and 5, 5, e sections along the outer margins of and are shorter than the portions 4%, scored lines 4, 4, 66 being run between and sections 4 and 5. The sections 5, have square pieces cut from notches 5.
their corners so as to leave right angled The sections 4 are scored transversely near their ends, as indicated b dotted lines 4, and the blank is cut throng 1 along the lines 4*, thus leaving end sections 4" which are adapted to be bent inwardly when the blank is folded into box form, as indicated at the right-hand side of Fig. 1.
The transverse scores indicated by dotted Patented Jan. 27 1914. 1
and end sections 6, the latter forming, with the flaps 4 the ends of the box when folded at right-angles to section 3. The sections 6 are defined by scores indicated b the dotted lines 6, which rovide folding ines for the sections 7 which are parallel to the sections 6, and are provided at their corners with win 7 which extend beyond the margins of t e portions 7, and are formed by cuts 7 and creases or scores 7 the latter facilitating -the bending outwardly of the wings as shown in Fig. 1.
A blank of the form shown, and out and scored as described is preferably finished by pasting the sections 5 to the sections 4, thus bringing the long edges of the sections 5, adjacent the scored lines 3, but this operation is not essential to the construction of the complete article. Assumin that the blanks are furnished the user wit the sections 5 pasted over the sections 4, the latter will bend up the blank along the lines 3', and bend inwardly the flaps 4 at right-angles to the sides 45. The end sections 6 will then be bent upwardly at right-a les to the se tion 3, and the sections 7 be bent over the flaps 4 thus bringing the section 7 on the inside of the structure. The wings 7" will then be pressed into the angular recesses formed by the notches 5', so that the edges of the wings will engage the edges of the members 5 on two sides of said notches with suificient tension (incident to the material) to hold them in place. It will be obvious that with these wings extending angularly across the four corners of the structure, they will not only hold the sections 7 in place, but will afford rests upon which the bottom of the bod of the box may rest when inverted to isplay the contents, as well as spacers which will maintain the cover and box in proper relative position when the box is closed.
I have not shown a box body adapted to fit within the cover described, as it may be of any desired construction, or may be made in Q memesaccordance with my invention covered .by a separate application for Letters Patent.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- 5 ters Patent, is i A box member composed of suitable ma} terial, out, scored and folded to provide 'a bottomwall, double side walls and double end walls, the inner members of the side 10 walls having rectangular recesses at the lower corners of the structure, and the inner members of the end walls having wings adapted to extend diagonally across the lower corners of the structure and to engage theedges of the side members adjacent said 15 recesses.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses; 4
