For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a plurality of relatively hinged plates and a plurality of springs disposed between the said plates and connected to one of the plates, a suitable material, such as felt or the like being disposed over the upper plate and having a shape substantially the same as the upper plate so that'the heel of a foot will not directly contact with the -upper plate.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which, Y l
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device, the lower portion of a shoe being shown in dotted lines to denote the relative position of my device in a shoe. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on'the line 2-2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line lr-B in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the under side of one of the plates and having a spring attached thereto. y
Referring more particularly to the views, I provide a plate 10 having a shape similar to the heel of a shoe. and hingedly mounted on one end. of the plate 10 is a second plate 11 similar in shape to the plate 10 and dis- Sp'ecication of Letters Patent.
plates, one leg of Patented June 11, 191 2.

posed substantially beneath the plate 10. At the side edges of the plate 10 downwardly struck lugs 12 are formed, slots 13 being provided on both sides of each of the said lugs. Springs 15 are provided, preferably having a U- springs disposed to pass through each of the slots 13 on both sides of the plate 10 and over the lug 12. The springs 15 engage the plate 10 adjacent the inner loop thereof and the outer ends 16 of the springsl 15 project outwardly from the main body of each Iof the springs, so that one of the ends abuts against the under side of the plate 10 and the other end abuts 'against the upperside of the plate 11, thus tending to relatively spread the plates at the outer ends thereof. n
A piece of material, having a shape substantially the same as that of the plate 10 is disposed over the plate 10 or secured thereto and when my device` is positioned in a shoe at the heel thereof, the heel of the foot will rest on the device and provide a suitable heel cushion for cushioning the foot at the rear thereof.
I-Iaving thus fully described the invention .what I claim as new, is
the combination with plates, a downof two opposite In a heel cushion two hingedly connected wardly struck lug on each sides of one of said plates, a slot formed at each side of each of said lugs, of apair'of U shaped springs disposed between said each of said springs'eX- tending over one of said lugs and through the slots at the sides thereof.
'In testimony whereof I aiiX my in presence of two witnesses.
