Application filed March 22, 1911. Serial No. 616,138.
' To all whom it may concern:
understood, reference is had to the action 1 'p'anymg drawings forming apart of this Be it lniown that I, RICHARD F. .Mason, a citizen of the United States, residing'at Bishop-ville, in the county of Lee and State of South vCarolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drilling Machines, of which the following is a specification.
a This invention relates to machines for drilling a series or group of" holes according tea pattern.
It is the objectof the present invention to provide a multiple-spindle drilling machine of the kind stated embodying certain novel structural details to be hereinafter described.
and claimed. p
The invention alsolhas for its ob ect to provide improved means for feeding thedrills into the work, acam-actuated lever bemg provided which engages the drill spindles to depress the same.
In order that the invention maybe-better specification, in which'- Figure 1 1s anelevation of the mach ne;
Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 is a sectional detail on the line 3'3 of Fig. 1
Referring specifically to the drawings, 5 denotes theframe'of the machine, said frame being suitably arranged to su'pportthe several parts to be hereinafterdescribed.
The work is clamped on a carriage 6 x which is slidable on balls 7 which latter run in grooves 8 in a sub-carriage 9 mounted on balls 10 running in grooves'll formedin a suitable support carried by the frame of the machine. The grooves 8 and 11 run at right angles with respect. to each other so that the work may be shiftedabout in any direction in a horizontal plane. The pattern is carried on a block 12, and a tracer 13 secured to the carriage 6; and cooperating with-the pattern, shifts the carriage in a well known manner. I D
At 14 are indicated the drill, spindles, they being arranged vertically, and supported forrotary' and sliding movement in the direction of their length, by suitable bearings stroke.
PatentedDec. 5, 1911;
springs l'l are-interposed, said springs bemg provided for the purpose of elevating the spindles at, the end of their working The spindles are geared together by pinions 18, and on one of the spindles is which is in mesh with a spur wheel 25 fas t on a shaft The shafts 22 and 26 are vertical and supported bybearings carried by 'mounted a drive pulley 19 suitably conthe arms 15. On the'shaft 26 is also made fast a pinion 27 which is in mesh with a spur wheel 28- carried by one of a' pair of clutch members mounted on the} shaft 22, said member being a sleeve' 29 loose on said shaft.v The other one of the clutch mom hers is a sleeve 30 which is splined on the shaft 22. =The opposite ends of these two clutch sleeves have teeth which are adapted to interlock, and when. in this position the I motion of the sleeve 29 is transmitted to the shaft 22. When the sleevesere disconnedbed the sleeve 29- runs, idle and no motion is transmitted to the shaft 22. A lever 31 is provided for shifting the clutch member 30,
said lever being pivoted to an upright 32 of the supporting frame, as indicated at and operatively connected to the clutch member in any suitable manner.
The upper end of the shaft 22 carries a cam wheel 3 arranged" horizontally, the loweredge of the rim of said wheel being shaped toproduce a cam. The cam surface at'the point 35 is-not as low as the cam surface at the point 36 which gives a very grad ual downward movement to the drill spindles with one revolution of the cam 'wheel.
The cam'wheel herein described is located above the drill spindles, and between said wheel and the upper ends of the drill spin dles is interposed a lever 37 which is pivoted is intengagement with the cam.
The lever 37 also carries adjusting screws 41 which are so-located that they are in contact with the upper ends of the drill spindles 14. These screws ermit close adjustment of the ion h of t e drill spindles and they are, secure in'adjusted position by lock nuts 42. The top edge out the cam wheel 84 is engaged by a roller l-3 supported by bearings 44 carried by horizontal arms 45. To the free end of the lever 37 is also connected one end of a coiledspring 46, the other end of which is connected to a stem l? adjustably supported on a bracket arm 48 a series of holes in said stem, the adjustment of the stem being for the purpose of regulating the tension of the spring. The function of the s ring 46 is. to .ieldingly' hold the roller 39 111 cont-act with t is cam 34.
From the periphery of the cam wheel 34 projects a in 50 which is, adaptedto be engaged b a cam whee said holding device comprising a lever 51 which is pivotedat 52 to the upright 32, and has, adjacent to its free end,-
a notch 53 adapted-tobe entered by the lug. The lever '51 is connected to the lever 31 bya bar 54 connected at its lower end by a wire 55 to a foot pedal 56. To the other end of the bar 54 is fastened one end of a coiled spring 57, the other end. of which is made fast to a stem 53 which is adjustably V mounted in the same manner as the stem 47.
The spring 57 normally holds the lever 51 in a position to lock the cam wheel, and the lever 31 in a position to disengage the clutch member 30' from the clutch: member 29. When the cam wheel is locked the lug seats in the notch 53.
The operation of the machine is as lows: The work mounted on the carriage 6 is shifted about by means of the tracer 13. After the work has been properly positioned with respect-to the drill spindles, the latter tated together 'tion of the shaft 26 is the engagement are depressed to effect the} drilling operation, this being accomplished in the following manner: The drill spindles 14 are rothrough the gears l8.- One of these 'gears'transmits the rotary motion of the spindles to'the gear 20, and through is transmitted to Upon depressing the foot 30 is engaged member 29 so that the monow transmitted, through the gears 27 and 28, and the clutch mechanism, to the shaft 22. Simultaneous of the clutch member the shaft 26.
with the clutch by means of pins 49 passing through two of into the path of the lug elding device for looking the a pinion on the spindle,
camwheel 30 with the clutch member 25'), the lever 51 is SWUH" dowmvardly'and disengaged from the lug o0, thus releasing the cam wheel 34, so that it may rotate with the left The rotation of the cam wheel, by reason of its engagement with the roller 39, depresses the lever '37, and this motion of the lever is transmitted through the adjusliilg screws 41 to the drill spindles 14, thereby feeding the latter downwardly into the work. At the end of the downward. feed of the drill spindles, the springs 17 elevate the same to their normal position, said springs being compressed as the spindles are fed downwardly. The pedal will also be released, whereupon the spring 57 swings the lever 31 in a direction to disen age the clutch members 29 and 30 and at t 1e same time to place the lever 51 in a position to lock the cam wheel, the free end of said lever extending 50 so that the latter may slip into the nolnh 53 when it reaches the same. That portion of the lever 51 the p'inionfil) is such that the pinion18 will not, become disengaged therefrom during the a longitudinal I. claim: 1.
