Definitions
- the present invention relates to the exclusive field of mail processing. It relates more particularly to a process and a printing device of a jet type franking machine ink.
- ink jet franking machine is known from document US-5,083,153. Inkjet printing provides machines very high flexibility in postage, especially when it comes to print postal items on mail items containing both variable characters, such as numeric values of an amount postage, and color layouts, such as advertising flames.
- the postal imprint contains data critical postal like the postage amount which represents a monetary value and no defect affecting this value, however small it may be, cannot be accepted by the Postal Administration.
- data critical postal like the postage amount which represents a monetary value and no defect affecting this value, however small it may be, cannot be accepted by the Postal Administration.
- smart postal footprints incorporating coded information
- Verification and validity of the postal imprint is based on the recognition of this coded information as well possibly other information present in clear on the fingerprint postal (date or machine number for example), and a reading error resulting from connection faults can have consequences damaging as to the validity finally recognized in the article of mail.
- the object of the present invention is to solve the problems aforementioned by proposing an improved printing process which overcomes, at least at the level of critical postal data, defects in connection of the ejection nozzles of the printing device of a machine inkjet postage.
- An object of the invention is to achieve this elimination of connection faults without significantly increasing the structure of the printing device.
- Another object of the invention is also to facilitate the subsequent recognition of critical postal data by postal administration.
- a method of printing a postal imprint on a postage item to be moved relative to to a printing device of an ink jet franking machine in a direction of travel F the postal imprint comprising at minus a postage amount, a deposit date and a code authentication device and the printing device comprising a plurality of ink droplet ejection nozzles arranged in two rows extending transversely to the direction of travel and spaced apart on the other by a distance D in this direction and a control means to selectively control the ejection of these ink droplets by function of the postal imprint to be printed, process characterized in that prints each of the critical postal data such as the amount postage, deposit date or authentication code from of a single row of nozzles.
- connection faults affecting previously the date of deposit and the amount of postage are deleted, the reliability of reading this data being consequently increased.
- field alignment adjustment is no longer essential.
- At least the end nozzles of the two rows of ejection nozzles arranged at the level a middle part of the postal imprint, to avoid a possible overlap when printing.
- certain determinants are selectively deactivated ejection nozzles to allow printing in resolution lesser data other than that relating to said postal data critics.
- the printing speed is increased and the cost of the imprint is reduced by reducing the quantity of ink ejected.
- the invention also relates to a jet printing device.
- ink from a franking machine intended to print a postal imprint on a postage item to be moved relative to to this device in a direction of travel F, the postal imprint including at least a postage amount, a deposit date and an authentication code
- the printing device comprising a plurality of ink droplet ejection nozzles arranged in two rows extending transversely to the direction of travel, these two rows of nozzles being spaced from each other by a distance D along this steering and control means for selectively controlling the ejection of these ink droplets according to the postal imprint at print, device characterized in that said control means is arranged so that, when printed, each of the postal data reviews such as the postage amount, the deposit date or the authentication codes are printed from a single row of nozzles.
- At least the end nozzles of the two rows ejection nozzles arranged at a middle part of the cavity are disabled to avoid overlap when printing.
- certain determined ejection nozzles are disabled to allow lower resolution printing of data other than that relating to said critical postal data.
- the franking machine of FIG. 1 comprises conventionally a conveying system (not shown) which moves according to a direction of movement F the item of mail to be franked 1 (a fold or a label for example) under an inkjet print head 2 stationary.
- This printing device comprises two housings 20, 21 each comprising a row of nozzles R1, R2 (the nozzles are shown by crosses), these two rows of nozzles being mounted in the device 2 so that they extend transversely to the direction of movement F, the two housings being offset one relative to the other both transversely and longitudinally to this direction F (from a distance D).
- the arrangement of the two boxes 20 and 21 is such that the distance between the rear nozzle B'128 (the one at the top in Figure 1) of the housing 21 and the first nozzle B1 (the lowest one in Figure 1) of the housing 20 is at least equal to the height H of a postal imprint 10 represented by the broken line rectangle on item 1.
- these two housings 20, 21 are mounted if possible so that the last nozzle B128 of case 20 (the one of case 20 uppermost in Figure 1) is spaced from the first nozzle B '1 of the housing 21 (that of the housing 21 most bottom on figure 1), in the direction perpendicular to the direction F, of a distance equal to the distance between two consecutive nozzles of one or the other of the rows of nozzles.
- the franking machine further includes a means of control 3, advantageously comprising a microprocessor and a program stored in an associated memory, not shown, which is arranged to selectively order (according to the postal imprint at print) the chronological succession of ejections of ink droplets different nozzles, in response to a synchronized clock signal 22, 23 or not with a speed of movement of the mail item under the head 2, so that it is possible to produce dots on this article which join together with little overlap the along straight lines parallel to direction F.
- a means of control 3 advantageously comprising a microprocessor and a program stored in an associated memory, not shown, which is arranged to selectively order (according to the postal imprint at print) the chronological succession of ejections of ink droplets different nozzles, in response to a synchronized clock signal 22, 23 or not with a speed of movement of the mail item under the head 2, so that it is possible to produce dots on this article which join together with little overlap the along straight lines parallel to direction F.
- unit 3 delays the command ejecting ink droplets from the nozzles of row R2 (the nozzles of the box 21 which is furthest downstream in the direction F) relative to the control of ejection of the ink droplets from the nozzles of row R1 (the nozzles of the housing 20 which is most upstream in the direction F), with a delay R varying as a function of the ratio d / V or d is a setting data previously stored in memory and representative of distance D.
- the distance D varies from one printing device to another and it is in principle necessary to adjust it after mounting the boxes 20 and 21 in the franking machine, for example by using the methods of adjustment before printing mentioned above developed by the applicant.
- Figure 2 illustrates a French postal imprint in the absence initial adjustment or in the event of defective adjustment or through use.
- the connection faults have been deliberately exaggerated for the sake of explanatory.
- the postal footprint is made up of three distinct areas.
- the first zone 50 corresponds to the stamp proper, the second zone 52 corresponds to the date stamp and the third zone 54 corresponds to the flame advertising.
- the stamp includes a mention 500 of the issuing State "FRENCH REPUBLIC", a postage amount 502, a mention 504 from the administration post office concerned "LA POSTE” and a postal number 506 of the machine having made the postage.
- the date stamp includes the contact details 520 of the mail delivery establishment, a delivery date 522, object number 524, object category 526, number deposit establishment 528, a redundant code for verifying the print quality 530 and a fingerprint authentication code 532.
- the configuration of the advertising flame is left to the imagination of postal service users.
- postage amount which represents a monetary value
- the date of deposit which must correspond to the actual delivery of the article to postal administration
- verification code which allows the control of the optical reading and coded authentication information which guarantees the integrity of the postal data forming the imprint.
- both the amount postage and deposit date are arranged in a part median of the postal footprint and are therefore particularly affected by connection faults in the two rows of ejection nozzles.
- the date of deposit as the postage amount are printed on the times by the row R1 of the ejection nozzles (for the lower half of these postal data) and by row R2 of the ejection nozzles (for half superior).
- verification and authentication codes are little different from other postal data in the date stamp area 52 which does not facilitate reading.
- any overlapping of the printing at this middle part which can occur if the distance between the end nozzles (B128 and B'1) of the two housings 20, 21, according to the direction perpendicular to F, is less than the distance between two nozzles successive ejection of the same housing, can be avoided by carrying out a deactivation of these two end nozzles.
- Selective deactivation of adjacent nozzles can advantageously also be envisaged, in particular at level of the different frames of the postal imprint.
- this data critical postcards are expected to be printed at a resolution higher than a standard resolution for printing other data postal imprint.
- the information thus provided with a more high resolution have better contrast and stand out better level of the postal imprint, which facilitates optical reading.
- the figure 3 gives an example with postage amount data 502, filing date 522, verification code 530 and code authentication 532.
- This modification of the print resolution can be obtained in two orthogonal directions T and F (see FIG. 1) from submultiples of a determined maximum resolution (R T , R F ), by selectively controlling activation or deactivation of certain nozzles.
- T and F a determined maximum resolution
- standard printing can be done at resolution (R T , R F * 2/3) and low resolution printing at the resolution (R T , R F / 2).
- reducing the resolution has the advantage allow an increase in the overall printing speed of the postal footprint and a reduction in ink consumption (with as a consequence a reduction in the printing cost price of one imprint) as well as a reduction in the drying time of this ink (this which avoids smudging with certain types of support).
